The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is Australia's national statistical agency. We provide trusted official statistics on a wide range of economic, social, population and environmental matters of importance to Australia. As an organisation, we are proud of our success as a trusted, independent and apolitical provider of statistics for all Australians.

Graduates in our Data Science stream will work in our Statistical Data Integration Division which is responsible for bringing existing information together to create new integrated data assets for the benefit of the Australian community, and plays a significant role in engagement with external data custodians and acquiring and analysing administrative data for statistical purposes.

Our success is driven by our talented employees and their capabilities which is why it is important for us to provide an exceptional working environment. We have offices located in each state, allowing the freedom of movement for participants involved in the graduate program. At the ABS we provide an ongoing commitment to career development through tailored learning and development programs as well as formal graduate training. Our focus for this graduate program is to help you develop your skills to effectively contribute to the core processes that the ABS undertakes.

The benefits:

  • Strong emphasis on training and development opportunities: participation in a structured training program, opportunities to shadow our Senior Executives and job training specific to your role.
  • Our graduate program runs for 9 months from early February to late October, allowing progression to a higher salary much faster than other graduate programs.
  • Most graduates commence on a salary of $57,438 (plus 15.4% superannuation), with ICT graduates starting on $62, 996 (plus 15.4% superannuation).
  • Salary advancement on successful completion of the program in October 2020: $62,996 for most streams; $70,858 for the ICT stream.
  • Most of our successful graduates are offered a position in their 'home' state, but we cover your relocation costs if you are required to relocate.
  • We can usually offer an early start if you are available to commence work before the graduate program officially commences in February 2020.
  • At the ABS we offer truly flexible working conditions with FlexWorks – our program of flexible working arrangements which includes the opportunity to work from home.
