Software Engineering

We provide digital services to over 6 million retail customers and 60,000 businesses. Our retail transactional platforms service a significant proportion of the Australian population, so getting it right without compromising availability, resilience, usability and performance is paramount. Our business services are delivered through various web and mobile channels and are critical to the Australian economy due to their volume, value and nature.

Our Digital Banking Engineering team is a community of more than 200 committed professionals who are driven by excellence and are highly passionate about what we do. As a team, we're responsible for the development and application architecture of all our digital touchpoints including the CommBank App, NetBank and CommBank Website. Our talented engineers, developers, designers and product owners care deeply for the customer experience and sweat the details! We drive the digital experience for more than 13.1 million users. We receive over 24 million app log-ins every week and create seamless experiences to positively impact our customers' lives with our products, apps and content every day.

Our mobile team is one of the biggest and best in Australia. We have deep expertise in native mobile, and enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of writing elegant and efficient code. Our people have a good degree of creative freedom – 'If you have a big idea, there is the appetite and motivation to make it happen.'

We've always been pioneers. We see no boundaries and create world-leading digital experiences. Our development shop runs with an agile philosophy. We live and breathe Agile, constantly setting the pace and continually refining and re-defining our customer interactions. If you're looking for a fast-paced environment with regular release cycles, as well as having a life outside of work, then that's just what you'll get.

We are looking for people to be part of high performing engineering teams in one of the largest and most forward-thinking technology houses in Australia. You'll have the opportunity to do real work that will allow you to put your passion and transferrable skills you've gained from your studies into practice and develop your technical knowledge, whilst contributing to outcomes which positively impact our business and customers.

Systems Engineering

As a team, we have a strong appetite for technically minded students to join our best in breed Systems Engineering teams. To be successful you'll thrive in a challenging environment, and are curious and tenacious when it comes to solving problems.

An interest in Linux and modern software-defined infrastructure practices will serve you well here. Your internship will provide exposure to a number of OpenStack tools. You will also have opportunity to learn from the best and refine some existing skill level in one or more of the following: Haskell, Scala, Python, Shell, Java, Bash, Perl, Clojure, Docker, Kafke, Spark and Hadoop.

We do more than software development. Engineering is a mindset where we take responsibility for continuous improvement, delivery of product outcomes, and awareness of the cost implications of our decisions. We look for people to speak up when things aren't right, fix what's broken, but most of all to exemplify a determination to innovate and create.

We view Systems Engineering as being distinct from Systems Administration; our people have deep knowledge of Linux internals, are well versed in modern software-defined infrastructure practices and the challenges of complex distributed systems, and are something of the artiste when troubleshooting & problem-solving. Our people believe they can change the system, not just make it run.

Operational Risk

Enterprise Services (ES) is inherently a high-risk Business Unit covering CommBank technology processes, procurement and banking operations processes supporting front line Business Units including Bankwest. ES has both domestic and international operations including London, New York, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, India and the Philippines, and customer verification services in New Zealand. The ES profile includes risks related to technology, cyber, operations, procurement and third party suppliers, delivery (project/ program), data quality and financial crime operations.

The Enterprise Services (ES) Operational Risk team partners with the ES business in the delivery of the Group's risk management frameworks, with the overall objective of the effective identification, measurement and management of operational and compliance risk.

The ES Operational Risk team brings together specialist risk advice, including Risk Engagement, Supplier Risk, Controls Assurance and Risk in Change, to support the business in the delivery of their outcomes within an effective risk culture. We work closely with the business to deliver insights to enable effective decision making and provide assurance over controls.

As a team, we have a strong appetite for technically minded students with an interest in the broader business environment to join our high performing Operational Risk team. To be successful you'll thrive in a challenging environment, and are curious and tenacious when it comes to solving problems.

Your internship will provide exposure to projects that will change the Bank, your critical thinking will also help challenge and solve technology-related issues that the business grapple with every day. You will also have the opportunity to learn from the best and build transferrable skills.

We do more than risk and control assurance. Risk is a mindset where we have the opportunity to challenge and influence the business leaders to make well-informed decisions which consider impacts to all the Group's stakeholders from customers, mum and dad investors through to our Regulators. We look for people to speak up when things aren't right, offer pragmatic solutions, but most of all to exemplify a determination to support ES to be a better Bank.

Cyber Security

Our mission is to protect the Bank and our customers from theft, losses and risk events. Our Cyber Security team helps over 14.5 million customers achieve this by providing a secure banking environment where they can interact confidently in an increasingly connected digital world.

This program gives you the opportunity to tailor the career you want. By joining Cyber Security as part of our Technology & Operations (Enterprise Services) Summer Intern Program, you'd have the option to work in the following areas (although not limited to): Penetration Testing, Developing Security Controls, Incident Response, Threat/Cybercrime Intelligence, Digital Forensics, Cyber Outreach, Privacy and Application Security.

At CommBank we're known for our innovative digital services. We've always been pioneers and we're currently investing heavily in data analytics, cryptocurrencies and Quantum computing. For the hundreds of new services or app updates we release, we need to ensure they are as secure as possible. This is why CommBank is building one of the country's largest digital assurance teams – our ethical hackers/penetration testers.

Penetration Testing – being our fastest growing area in information security, our ethical hackers are given an almost limitless array of tools to attempt to break our products and services before they go live for our customers, hence - a great environment to work in if you enjoy being up-to-date with the latest technologies and pulling things apart to see how they work.

Developing Security Controls - when we do find vulnerabilities or come up against a new adversary attacking our existing controls, we may need to develop new ones. Occasionally we see malware in the wild that commercially available detection systems haven't picked up yet and very quickly have to discover how it works, who it's targeting and who might be vulnerable to it. We might need to disassemble that malware in a controlled environment to see whether we need to adjust our controls. Very occasionally, a threat is so new and so radically different that those controls aren't readily available, so we might need to develop them on-the-fly. We have a team of software developers that specialise in this area. Even with the commercially available software we use, it's rarely a case of 'set and forget'. We have systems that generate alerts every time an anomaly appears in the logs of our network devices and teams of people who focus on refreshing the algorithms used in those systems. A strong foundation in programming, maths and an interest in data analytics would be advantageous to working in this area.

Cyber Incident Response – A dynamic and fast-changing area of IT - when we do have incidents that are worthy of our attention, there are specialist responders who investigate and triage. They will adjust our controls if we were to experience something like a Denial or Service attack and will analyse malware found in the wild to protect our customers against infection or to assist law enforcement. Our people typically have a broad mix of computing, network engineering and problem-solving skills.

Threat and Cybercrime Analyst – Becoming more attuned to our adversaries' methods of attack, a Threat Analyst takes in data from potentially hundreds of sources, on what might be over the horizon to lookout for any actor or scam that specifically targets our customers and the digital services they are likely to use. These feeds might come from security vendors, Computer Emergency Response Teams, our peers in other security teams, from the Government or our customers reporting a scam they've been sent on an email. They study the underground marketplaces used by malicious actors to see what malware kits they're selling, what data they're dumping and whose credentials they've stolen.

Digital Forensics – A massive growth area, working in digital forensics requires a rare mix of computing skills with a sound knowledge of the law, in cases where we need to prove what historical events happened on a computer system and may be used for legal discovery.

Privacy Advisors –Our privacy advisors need to understand the intersection of the law and computing. Our privacy team help to ensure every new service or app we release is compliant with Privacy regulations, and that every app or service meets the privacy expectations our customers have of us as a bank.

Application Security – We are now working closer and closer with the software development teams at Commbank to educate and provide tools to assist them to develop more secure code.
