A unique opportunity exists in ABL's Melbourne office for a law graduate to join our banking & finance team. This role would suit either a graduate or someone who has recently commenced their career and is looking to join private practice.

This graduate role forms part of a graduate cohort across our Melbourne and Sydney offices.

A bit about us

Arnold Bloch Leibler (ABL) is a leading commercial law firm, based in Melbourne and Sydney. We are renowned for advising clients on their most significant legal matters: high-stakes transactions, commercial issues and disputes. We have a diverse range of clients, including entrepreneurial ASX listed companies, privately owned businesses, high wealth individuals and family groups. When it matters most, our clients come to ABL as a trusted legal advisor.

The banking & finance practice

Our banking & finance lawyers understand how to manage the legal and commercial risks inherent in all financial transactions and offer smart, effective solutions to both borrowers and lenders. We advise across the full spectrum of financing transactions, ranging from corporate and property finance to complex structured and project financing matters, solvent and insolvent restructurings and recapitalisations.

Our clients include a number of major domestic and international trading and investment banks and financiers. We also advise substantial private family groups, corporates, property developers, private equity, hedge and special situation funds, fund managers, institutional investors, project sponsors and underwriters in domestic and cross-border transactions.

We understand that for many of our clients, financing is just one aspect of the deal, and so our teams are resourced to provide legal services across all disciplines required and to seamlessly integrate advice with our property, construction, commercial, insolvency and tax teams.

Our services include:

  • Property finance;
  • Corporate finance;
  • Capital raisings;
  • Project financing; and
  • Restructuring.

The role

We're looking for an outstanding graduate who is a self-starter with highly developed analytical skills, an eye for detail and strong interpersonal skills. You have an exceptional legal mind, as well as commercial and strategic nous. You enjoy feeling challenged, and to be given opportunities to take on additional responsibility with autonomy. You want to feel like you are an important member of, and making a meaningful and valued contribution to, a team that is consistently outperforming its competitors. You are ambitious, enjoy success and are ready to perform at your own high standard.

You will have:

  • completed your law degree and achieved excellent academic results;
  • achieved strong results in banking & finance law with a genuine passion for this subject matter;
  • private practice experience in finance (desirable);
  • an ability to communicate, both in writing and orally, clearly and concisely;
  • strong interpersonal skills;
  • excellent attention to detail;
  • an ability to understand and identify the key issues in a legal matter;
  • good judgement and common sense;
  • the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; and
  • a passion for a career in commercial law.

Overview of key responsibilities

The wide range of duties that the position will be responsible for include:

  • drafting;
  • research and analysis;
  • negotiation and strategizing; and
  • building relationships with clients and with others in the firm.

The Law Graduate program

When you join Arnold Bloch Leibler as a graduate, you will immediately experience our firm's point of difference. From your very first day, you will work alongside thought leaders in the profession on important and complex cases that will provide opportunities to flex your thinking, offer direct input and gain in-depth knowledge. Your opinions will be respected and you'll be given autonomy to progress matters. Your contribution will be valued and you will be supported in your personal and professional growth.

At Arnold Bloch Leibler we believe success comes from investing in personal and professional growth. That's why we've stepped outside the square to provide a unique in-house graduate training program. Rather than attending an external course, as a graduate, you will learn on the ground, from our best and brightest partners and senior associates - leaders in their respective fields who provide supervised training and continuous mentoring.

A supervising Partner will invest in your development and get you involved in a wide variety of matters throughout your graduate year. You will benefit from real work experience and direct client contact that sets you apart from your peers in the profession.

Your engagement is our focus and we know it is important to make the right career choices. ABL is a commercial law firm that gives graduate trainees the flexibility to either become outstanding generalists, or specialists in their chosen practice area. At ABL, it is the hope that every graduate trainee will one day become a Partner.
