Our seasonal clerkship: The best way to understand what it feels like to work here is to actually work here!

Every year, we hold clerkships in each of our offices to give you an intensive experience of our culture and the kind of work we do.

In Sydney/ Canberra you'll spend time in two departments, where you'll work with a supervising partner, a lawyer and a buddy who'll get you involved in real work.

You can expect to be involved in a wide variety of work and activities during your clerkship. Ranging from preparing draft articles for clients, preparing file notes and case summaries to assist with pro-bono matters and research projects.

There's also a chance to get involved in understanding other practice areas through workshops, team-building events to understand how we work together, and social events to get to know our teams away from the bustle of daily life.

Desirable skills and competencies: There's absolutely no Ashurst "type". We want to actively involve and include a broad range of minds with a broad range of backgrounds, all united by a common set of strengths - or competencies.

All successful clerks will demonstrate characteristics of; analytical ability, flexibility, motivation, determination and drive. They will have outstanding communication skills, commercial awareness and strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Your application: What you say in your application is up to you: but be sure to express your personality and tell us why you want to be a commercial lawyer – and why you'd like to join Ashurst in particular.

We offer clerkships in each of our Australian offices, application and recruitment dates are aligned to the state guidelines. You'll firstly need to decide which office you want to clerk in, and only make one application.

Career advancement: Variety of experience is essential in developing the kind of expertise that will set you apart. At Ashurst, you won't just be learning from the past. You will also be developing the instincts to tackle the most complex issues in international law, and building an understanding of each client's business.

The ways in which we support you to do this are equally varied. Structured training helps you develop the highest standards of technical legal knowledge. Honest, transparent conversations ensure you know exactly what we expect from you. Useful, constructive feedback helps you learn. And a network of highly respected figures will not only inspire you, they will actively mentor your development.

Our structured Global Training Program is offered across the firm to all staff of all career levels. Our clerks and graduates take part in a combination of legal expertise, industry and business skills sessions which lay the foundations for continuous learning at Ashurst. In addition, our graduates complete our in-house fully funded PLT course delivered by the College of Law.
