The Story of ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Australian Broadcasting Company was founded in 1929 and started as a radio network. On 1 July 1932, it was made a state-owned corporation under the name of the Australian Broadcasting Commission and was officially launched by Prime Minister Joseph Lyons and ABC radio announcer Conrad Charlton for listeners at home.

With the ABC Act in 1983, the name of the organisation was changed to The Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The ABC Charter that was set down by the Parliament requires the corporation to provide informative, educational, and entertaining services that reflect the breadth of the nation.

In 2001, ABC established its international television service. It was previously known as ABC Asia Pacific but changed into ABC Australia. It is a subscription service that is available in 40 countries throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Today, ABC has developed into a multi-platform media operation. With 56 Australian and 11 international locations, it is the largest creative employer in the southern hemisphere. Although owned and funded by the government, the ABC is editorially independent.

Culture & vibe

ABC is a diverse organisation with employees working across Australia and the world. It is like a confederation of units and departments which have vastly different styles and cultures.

With knowledgeable teams, great training and learning opportunities, the corporation has a good learning environment to gain TV experience within the digital transformation space. ABC is currently on an innovation journey, in the process of updating its technology, and in the transition from a traditional broadcaster to Australia’s most valued digital media organisation.

To reach ABC’s digital future, the approach to learning and training is changing too. There has been a big shift from formal classroom-based courses to more flexible courses and informal training that is better suited to the geographically dispersed, 24/7 broadcast organisation.

Recruitment process

The recruitment process involves reviewing the applications, interviews, background checks and shortlisting. First of all, you can apply for the right role through ABC’s site, sign up for job alerts, and follow their social media for new opportunities.

Make sure you have read the Position Description so you understand more about the role. To apply, you need to complete an online application form and upload your resume, cover letter, and supporting documents.

They will review all the applications by paying attention to your skills and experience to see if you are suitable for the position. They may contact you to get to know you better and work out your next steps, such as an interview.

To ensure fair decision-making, the interviews use a panel and can be in person or by video call. The process is direct and to the point in finding what the interviewees have to offer and what skills they have. The questions are about the key criteria of the role, and you may be asked to complete an activity or come in for a second interview.

Before a final offer, they will conduct professional referee checks. Depending on the position, they may also need to do other pre-employment checks. If you do not progress at any of the stages, your application will remain in their database for any future opportunities.

Career prospects

ABC operates with a rapidly changing nature which requires the staff to keep learning and developing their skills. The corporation is committed to its career development and therefore, it provides training and development via coaching sessions, seminars and courses, on-the-job projects, as well as e-learning packages and webinars.

They strive to build self-organising and collaborative teams that offer a supportive environment in which all team members can grow. In line with the industry trends, the training is specially designed to enhance the understanding of changes in digital technologies, including the use of social media, web technologies, and the use of multiplatform production techniques.
