The ABS are seeking Student Data Scientists to work with data under the supervision of experienced team members – to understand large datasets, link datasets together, and create datasets that enable insights. This work fits into the growing field of Data Science.

Responsibilities include:

  • working with and understanding large datasets, including cleaning, coding and standardising data items
  • implementing linking strategies
  • observing and implementing ABS data security policies and procedures to preserve the privacy of the individuals represented in the data
  • building new analytical datasets by merging data items via linking concordances, including the derivation of new data items for specific analytical needs.

Applicants will be able to demonstrate all or most of the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • programming experience (SAS preferred, other languages acceptable) and a passion for data
  • strong conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to work effectively in a team
  • initiative, good judgement and the ability to organise, prioritise and complete tasks.

Studies in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Science and Engineering all have relevance to this role, but we are open to candidates from a range of backgrounds.
