I wake up at the time my train would normally depart the station—a small joy of working from home. I get ready for the day, have breakfast, and commence the three-second commute from the kitchen to my desk.

8.30 AM

It’s the start of the work day. While my laptop turns on, I check my work mobile for any urgent messages or emails and greet my team in our group chat. After checking my calendar for the day, I read the ASIC’s daily media report before starting my daily market surveillance.

9.30 AM

I have a query from my daily market surveillance that I want to discuss with a senior colleague, so I shoot them a quick message on Teams to see if they’re free for a quick call. We hop on the phone, share screens, and talk through the matter.

10.00 AM

Following our conversation, I prepare a summary of the daily market surveillance and distribute this to the wider Markets team at ASIC.

10.30 AM

At 10:30am every business day, daily interest rates are published by the ASX to the market. It is my job to access and summarise these rates, before circulating to the wider Markets team at ASIC.

11.00 AM

I have a quick meeting now with two of my colleagues in preparation for an external meeting we have at 2:30pm. We’re meeting with the reporter of a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR), seeking clarification about what they have described to us. We run through the agenda and delegate tasks. We also use this time to check in on each other as it’s a less formal meeting, and end the meeting with a bit of banter.

11.30 AM

I’m now continuing with some work for a long-term project that I am involved in, which aims to improve the analysis capabilities of the Markets team. I am writing up an explanation of some features I would like to see implemented in the new software, based on my experience conducting the daily surveillance. I am also responding to some queries that the developers had and managing the development of a user guide for new starters in the team.

1.00 PM

Lunch time. I like to spend my lunch outside enjoying the sun (when it’s there) and will often head down to the oval for a run, or for a walk and coffee with a friend who lives nearby. I’ll then come back home to eat some food and relax.

2.00 PM

I’m continuing with my work on the analytics project, keeping in mind any final preparation I may need to do for the 2:30pm meeting.

2.30 PM

Meeting time. We dial in to the meeting with the reporter of the SAR, who is joined by their senior management and representatives from their legal team. The meeting runs smoothly but we do require more evidence from the reporter. They have agreed to provide this evidence by the end of the week.

3.30 PM

My two colleagues and I hop on the phone again for a meeting debrief. We finalise the minutes of the meeting and update the file notes of the matter. I prepare an email to send to all attendees, thanking them for their time earlier and noting the one action item.

4.00 PM

I am back working on the analytics project, and the developers have begun implementing some items that I requested earlier in the day. I can now test these out and provide feedback to them immediately.

5.00 PM

End of day. I check my calendar for tomorrow and add any reminders I might need for the morning when I log on. I say goodbye to my team in our group chat and log off for the day, heading out of my ‘office’ for my three second commute back to the kitchen.
