Emily Reed

Working at BMD has helped me to confirm that engineering is a career path I am passionate about pursuing in the future.

What’s your day-to-day role like?

My role changes daily, however, it usually involves assisting the engineers and project managers onsite with the coordination of work in building and infrastructure projects. Some of the projects I’ve worked on so far include an intersection upgrade, a roundabout upgrade and building a community centre.

Some of my tasks include interpreting architectural and engineering plans, drawings, specifications and designs, liaising with suppliers and contractors to procure subcontractors and order materials and equipment, assist in planning and coordinating construction activities including quality management, programming and safety.

I also help project managers to monitor budgets, costs and variations and prepare and submit various site documentation including permits, test reports and inspection test plans (ITP).

How has your work experience at BMD helped you in your understanding of a career in engineering?

Working at BMD, I have realised that a career in engineering provides you with an opportunity to be involved in a really wide range of tasks on a wide range of different projects. I’ve learnt that a career in engineering is not just about the design and calculations behind a project but also involves creating programmes, managing budgets, communicating with a range of subcontractors, and managing the daily workflow on a construction site. Through my work experience, I’ve learnt that a career in engineering is everchanging, and requires continual learning and problem-solving skills. Working at BMD has helped me to confirm that engineering is a career path I am passionate about pursuing in the future.

How has your work experience helped you with your university studies?

Working as an undergraduate engineer has helped me to visualise a career in engineering and establish long-term career goals in the field. It has provided me with more motivation to apply the practical skills learnt onsite at BMD with the theory learnt at university. I have also noticed parallels between numerous subjects at university and day-to-day work as an engineer including design and planning, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, and project management.

What is something new you’ve learnt through working with BMD?

I have learned a great deal through working at BMD. I have learnt about the construction industry and gained helpful skills and knowledge working with civil engineers onsite. I have been able to immerse myself in the day-to-day work of an engineer at BMD and have learned how different projects are run. I can also visualise how engineers fit into a project from start to finish which has helped to confirm that a career in engineering is well suited to my skills and passions.

What advice would you give other university students who aren’t currently in an undergrad program?

I would recommend current university students to actively search for undergraduate positions online or through their university to find placements/positions as undergraduate engineers. I would also recommend signing up to LinkedIn and updating their profile to accurately reflect current work experience and degrees being studied.  I truly believe the experience I have gained at BMD as an undergraduate engineer is invaluable and has already provided me with the opportunity to grow in my career before I even finish my degree!
