As a Graduate Site Engineer I plan, organise, and monitor technical aspects of construction projects.

How long have you been working with BYCA and what is it about the company that makes you excited?

After completing an exchange semester at the University of Melbourne in 2015, I started working with BYCA as an Undergraduate Engineer with a six month internship. Afterwards I was given the opportunity to stay with the company as a Graduate Engineer and now 18months later I’m working on the NorthConnex Project – a project that will be Australia’s longest road tunnel.

What is your current role and what do you do?

As a Graduate Site Engineer I plan, organise, and monitor technical aspects of construction projects. My time is divided between the office and the field and my responsibilities include project administration, conducting quality assurance reports, and meeting project deadlines.

My team includes site and project engineers and we work alongside other departments including surveying, traffic, community and stakeholder and environment.

Why did you want to join the construction industry?

There are a lot of reasons why I’ve chosen to work in construction and work with Bouygues. I enjoy solving technical issues and no day seems the same. Socially, I get to work with people from all different backgrounds, cultures and skills, and I enjoy the teamwork of everyone working together to achieve project targets.

It’s a very practical industry, and the hours can seem long but I feel that it’s not all about making money but building our future. With Bouygues I feel that everyone’s ideas are welcome, whether it’s coming up with suggestions to create a safer workplace or ideas on how to be more productive, cost efficient or support colleagues.

I wake up every day knowing that my daily tasks will provide me with the challenges I need to apply my existing knowledge and to also learn in a solutions based environment – it’s what makes my job so exciting and rewarding.

What are you future aspirations and where would you like your career to take you?

Bouygues is a really big global company, so I’m excited at the potential for opportunities here and overseas, across Asia, the UK, Europe and the Americas.

What are the three pieces of advice you would give yourself if you were starting your studies again?

  • Choose topics that you are interested in.
  • Enjoy your student life and your free time.
  • Don’t stress too much about your future.
