The coolest thing about my job is I have more chances to interact with Board members and get to know them.

What's your job about?

I am working in Bunzl Australia and New Zealand, which is a multination distribution and outsourcing company. Bunzl has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since 1957 and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. In my role as an Analyst, I report directly to the Head of Marketing, my main responsibility included running marketing reports and digital reports for 12 branches across Australia & New Zealand; Applying for FCS(Forest Stewardship Council) Certificate; Updating website changes using CMS, etc.

The first thing I do every morning is checking emails and reply to them. I will check the schedule of the day if I have any meetings to attend during the day. Later on, I will track orders on Shopify and traffic on Google Analytics, and update the information to an Excel tracking sheet. After finishing daily tasks, I will be starting on running reports. Most of the data is stored in our internal system, thus I have to pull out the right data from the system and export them to Excel. After analysing the data, I will do the visualization, create graphs and copy them to PowerPoint slides in a certain format, and write insights of data on the slide to help the audience to understand better.

There is a deadline for each report, so I have to make sure to deliver a good quality report with accurate data before the deadline.

Interesting details of my job. My position is a stand-alone position, thus I don’t have much support for what I am doing. The good side of it is I will get lots of chances to self-learning by watching video tutorials online. For example, my role requires me to know about Google Analytics, so my manager agrees and supports me to learn about it during working hours! It helps me in my work as well as my personal knowledge growth.

What's your background?

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and grew up in Shanghai, Mainland China. I went to the UK, the University of Liverpool for a bachelor’s degree in Economics. Finished my bachelor's degree in 2019 and went to Brisbane, the University of Queensland to pursue my Master's degree in Information systems.

This is my first full-time job after graduation. It has been 7 months since I joined the Bunzl family. I applied to the Grads program on Linkedin and went through a few rounds of interviews, luckily got in at the end.

As an international student, there is a VISA limitation when looking for a job. I am grateful that Bunzl is willing to open up opportunities for international students!

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, the role as an Analyst doesn’t require you to have a strong relevant education background, but a candidate needs to have good analytical skills; proficiency in Excel; ability to extract meaningful insights from data. Soft skills such as communication skills, and being a good team member will also be a big plus!

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing about my job is I have more chances to interact with Board members and get to know them. Because the reports I make will need to deliver to Board members, sometimes we need to discuss the figures and the reasons behind the number. So I probably have more chances to interact and learn from the big boss than others. Worth to mention that board members are a lot more easy-going than you think! They are all very approachable but just busy.

What are the limitations of your job?

The limitation of my job is as I mentioned earlier, Analyst is a stand-alone position, so I don’t have a mentor to guide me. But there are plenty of accessible sources online, Internet can be your good teacher!

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Networking is important, it would be good to start to know more people working in the same industry as you before graduating.
  2. Study the major that you are passionate about.
  3. Good learning ability/habit is more important than marks.
