What it does: Canva is a global online visual communications platform designed to empower the world to design. With more than 150 designs created on Canva every second, it’s a simple way to create beautiful designs from presentations to infographics, videos, t-shirts and social media graphics.

Best known for: Canva is guided by a ‘simple’ two step plan — step one: to become one of the most valuable companies in the world, and most importantly, step two: to do the most good they can.

Staff stats: Canva has a team of over 2500 Canvanauts working across the globe, with offices in 8 countries.

The good bits: Canva's culture is unlike anywhere else and they design your #CanvaLife experience to empower you to do the best work of your life. Canva informs candidates about the results of their applications within 48 hours from the final interview.

The not so good bits: Canva wants to get to know you and the magic you can bring to Canva, so applicants should dedicate a few hours to complete the recruitment process.

The Canva story

Canva was founded by Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams in 2012. Since officially launching to the public in August 2013, Canva has grown exponentially, amassing over 75 million monthly active users across 190 different countries. Canva's valuation also continues to grow at pace, with it last valued at US$40 billion in September 2021.

At Canva, the journey is just as important as the destination. So while they strive towards their goals, Canva believes in being a force for good along the way.

And the best bit is that Canva's only achieved 1% of what they know they're capable of.

The culture

Canva's culture is unlike anywhere else and they design your #CanvaLife experience to empower you to do the best work of your life. You can dream big at Canva and set crazy big goals, powered by the help of your team.

Canva is a values led organisation with their values at the heart of everything they do. Their values are the spirit behind every action and intention at Canva, creating a culture where everyone can thrive, no matter your role.

Canva appreciates that the richness of its culture relies on diversity of thought, experience and expression. Canva has created a culture where people are empowered to come to work as themselves. Canva is inclusive and accepting of everyone for who they are, as they are. That counts for you too.

In our new working world, Canva knows that no one knows how you like to work better than you. Canva has a hybrid work model that sees Canvanauts come together in person for 8 days a year. So whether you're in the office, working from home or choosing your own adventure, Canva has designed the Canvanaut experience to help you do you.

Be A Force For Good

Canva is guided by a ‘simple’ two step plan — step one: to become one of the most valuable companies in the world, and most importantly, step two: to do the most good they can.

To work towards achieving step two of their plan, Canva's joined the 'Pledge 1%' movement, making a commitment to dedicate 1% of its equity, profit, time and product towards making the world a better place.

Canva established the Canva Foundation which focused on projects and partnerships that have a positive social impact, at both the global and local community levels.

Canva also aims to be ethical in as many ways as it can - through actions both big and small. Canva supports ethical suppliers at its offices and aims to minimise kitchen waste, with 80% of the vegetables used in the Sydney office kitchen produced on Canva's own farm.

Do you want to be a force for good? Every Canvanaut gets 3 days of paid volunteering leave per year. You can use your skills to use at a non-profit, helping out the community or getting involved in other community based initiatives.

Recruitment Process

The recruitment process varies slightly depending on the type of role you've applied for. You can generally expect a 4 step recruitment process. Following your online application, you'll start the process by chatting with a recruiter. You'll then participate in 1 - 2 interviews with your future team, along with completing a Canva Challenge.

For Engineering or Technical roles, you may be also required to complete a coding challenge following your chat with the Canva recruiter.

You'll be provided with feedback at every step of the recruitment process. Expect the recruitment process to take up to 4 weeks on average from your recruiter chat. Canva wants to get to know you and the magic you can bring to Canva, so applicants should dedicate a few hours to complete the recruitment process.

Diversity is celebrated at Canva. They believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expression is key to building the best product, team and company. Canva looks for many different skills and abilities, along with how you can enhance Canva and it's culture. Canva makes hiring decisions based on your experience, skills and passions. So, even if you don't think you quite fit all the skills listed or tick all the boxes, Canva would still love to hear from you!

Canva wants to ensure that you feel comfortable during your recruitment process, so please tell them the pronouns that you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need.

Remuneration & Career Growth

Canva divides their teams into 11 specialities comprising business strategy and operations, data, design, engineering, facilities and administration, finance and legal, people, product management, marketing, sales and success, and support.

Canva's graduate program, Launchpad, is for career starters looking to lay the foundations for a successful, fulfilling and exciting career. Whether you’re fresh out of university, high school or looking to make a change early on in your career, Canva's 12-month professional development program, will provide you with the skills to get your career off to a flying start. Work across key business areas within Canva while building a network of mentors, co-workers, and friends along the way.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Clubs and events are a ton of fun, getting food at work is really nice too. The vibies really try to make things fun and exciting.
  • The people I work with are all amazing & I also have a very supportive manager, which makes coming to work everyday an absolute joy! I also get to work on a range of different things, which means I can better hone my skills.
  • The culture. Canva is a company that sees their employees as their biggest asset; this leads to them investing money into us to ensure we fill fulfilled in all areas of life through regular social events, volunteering opportunities and career growth.
  • My team dynamic is not good. I feel like my manager and other teammates are condescending. I struggle with even asking for help because the responses I've gotten back in the past have been very discouraging. I think it may just be my team though, so I think I just got unlucky. Part of this may before joining, the grads were sent out a form for what teams they were most interested in, however neither me or a lot of my friends got anything close to what they put down on that form.
  • Barely any pay transparency, some of the policies around gender diversity is subpar at best (e.g. gender affirmation policies).
  • Only thing might be confusion due to the business constantly changing (but that's really a growth opportunity).
