The greatest benefit of a Graduate role at CSL Behring is the variety in the work you are exposed to during your time in the Graduate Program.

What's your job about?

At CSL Behring, we are driven by our promise to deliver innovative, effective and safe plasma-derived and recombinant therapies to improve the quality of life for patients who use our products. As a Graduate within the Quality function at CSL Behring’s Broadmeadows manufacturing site, I have been fortunate enough to undertake roles in both the Process/Cleaning Validation and Quality Assurance (Projects Compliance) departments. Some of my experiences to date have included:

  • The testing of highly technical equipment located in manufacturing areas to ensure its function as required for operational use.
  • The collection and analysis of data to demonstrate manufacturing processes operate as developed and designed.
  • Overseeing the execution of projects implemented to promote continuous improvement and growth for CSL Behring.

The greatest benefit of a Graduate role at CSL Behring is the variety in the work you are exposed to during your time in the Graduate Program. My ‘day-to-day’ responsibilities have varied from collaborating with colleagues in cross-functional teams working to execute site projects, drafting and reviewing Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) documentation and coordinating and even conducting sampling for the testing of our equipment and manufacturing processes.

What's your background?

Growing up, my family relocated quite a few times and by the age of 15, I had already lived in four different countries. As a youth admittedly, it was challenging moving so often and having to start afresh in every new setting but I believe this was instrumental in shaping my outlook and perspective. These early experiences are the reason one of my aspirations was to work for a global company like CSL Behring, and why I never second-guessed my decision to move to Melbourne from Sydney when the opportunity presented itself. I still harbour hopes to, one day, work at a CSL Behring site on another continent.

Like many young people in high school and university, I had very little idea of what “I wanted to do when I grew up.” An aptitude for the sciences directed me towards studying engineering at the tertiary level but it was not until I began my graduate coursework in biomedical engineering that my professional goals gained a little more definition. My exposure to this remarkable field that merged technology and healthcare and the consequent work experience I gained at a medical device company during my time at university only confirmed my notions of wanting to work in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Our employees are extremely diverse with a wide range of backgrounds and skillsets. The pharmaceutical industry is incredibly unique. As such, you will never be entirely prepared to commence a role at CSL Behring and there is no set rubric for the ‘ideal’ employee. However, having a Science/ Technical background is beneficial to successfully fulfil one’s responsibilities including a strong desire to learn accompanied by the ability to adapt, communicate and collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams and the capacity to persevere through adversity.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I have always had an interest in science and engineering and so working at a place like CSL Behring where we are at the forefront of biotechnological innovation is tremendously exciting. The highly technical nature of the work paired with the company’s drive to help treat patients and improve the quality of their lives makes my day at work both stimulating and fulfilling.

What are the limitations of your job?

Every job is uniquely challenging and working in a GMP facility is no different. I work at the CSL Behring manufacturing site in Broadmeadows, Victoria where our products are manufactured twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week!  In addition, the company has offices across the world and in a number of different time zones. This means that, depending on your role and responsibilities, the working hours can require some flexibility.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Jump at every opportunity to travel and take part in exchange programs offered by the university.
  2. Take this time in your life to explore hobbies and areas of interest outside of those you already have. Be open-minded as your greatest passions may still be unknown to you!
  3. Listen to the advice and seek the guidance of your parents and other ‘grown-ups’ in your life. Whatever the context, they will likely be able to steer you in the right direction.
