Chris Nguyen

One of the things I enjoy most about my job is having the opportunity to provide creative input into what we’re building.

What's your job about?

Datacom provides software solutions to assist companies operate, from cloud services, IT management, data centres, customer contact solutions and procurement solutions. My responsibility as a UX Designer is to assist in the development of the user interface design and the usability of the products from end to end.

My daily task as UX Designer varies depending on which stage of the project is currently at, I would attend scrum meetings to check how aligned our team’s workflow is with the other teams on the project. From there, I would move onto a variety of things such as brainstorming concepts, designing wireframes based on requirements provided by BA’s and working on building prototypes and assisting in developing visual style guides for the client.

What's your background?

I grew up in Western Sydney in Liverpool, some of the most important stages throughout my current life has been my years in university, it was a stage in my life where I was able to discover my passions and build skill sets and abilities that cater towards my current career goals.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, absolutely they can! User experience design, in my opinion, is about understanding human behaviour. It requires an open mind and an ability to empathize and understand people’s perspectives if they can develop that mindset, they already have a good foundation for UX Design career path.

A creative eye and an ability to understand visual design is always a good prerequisite to have for any UX Designer unless you’re searching to do solely user experience research, companies these days are quite often looking for decent visual design background.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

One of the things I enjoy most about my job is having the opportunity to provide creative input into what we’re building. I also love the team culture here at Datacom everyone really does look after each other and ensuring everyone’s up to date of what’s going on within the project.

What are the limitations of your job?

I would say the limitation I have is based on what UX work is available to my team which also creates a dependency on what I can get my hands on to do and learn occasionally.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Meet more people: having genuine conversations with people is a good way to understand different perspectives on things on life you may not come across or think about.
  • As cliché as it sounds… Get out of the comfort zone: Have fun go out more, you have your whole life to be comfortable.
  • Set more goals: Create goals that you can achieve, I find personally setting goals is a good way to build confidence within yourself and as a bonus it’s quite fulfilling once you look back and reflect on your achievements.
