Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
Certainly one of the best parts of working at Defence.
Midlevel, Canberra
A lot of opportunities within the APS for promotion and lateral moves. Many opportunities to move into contacting or Australian Industry in support of the Defence sector.
Graduate, Adelaide
From the graduate point of view there are opportunities for promotion once you have spent time in research and looked for development opportunities in terms of managing/leading projects and people (on a small scale) So take those opportunities to provide input once comfortable!

Clear promotion pathway and plenty of opportunities. Hierarchy structure easy to follow
Graduate, Canberra
During the grad program I am an APS 4 but after the grad program I am automatically promoted to an APS 5. There are also numerous recruitment options to change positions or get a promotion.
Graduate, Sydney
Very dependent on your location, in Canberra promotion opportunities are much more regular, on ADF bases the time for promotion takes longer
Graduate, Nowra, NSW
It's a great time for career progression in the APS, and also in Defence. Plenty of jobs advertised and lots of work to go around.
Graduate, Canberra
Yet to have much experience personally, but once out of the grad program there seems to be ample opportunity although competitive, where most APS positions are open to the public and internally.
Graduate, Melbourne
It appears that after the program there are many job opportunities and progression potential available.
