Amy Joslyn

Workforce Strategy, People Strategy Branch

6.00 AM

My alarm is set… but I always love an extra 10-minute shut-eye. I doze back off.

6.10 AM

Second alarm – I’m ready for the day. I have a shower and get dressed. In the meantime, I’m nagging at my 3-year-old son to get up and have a shower.

7:30 AM

Everyone in the house is dressed, fed, lunches made and bags packed. We’re ready and we’re out the door. We drive to work and day-care.

8.00 AM

I arrive at work, put my lunch in the fridge, fill up my water and log into the computer. I usually start by logging my start time in so I don’t forget and check my emails. I am managing two mailboxes at the moment – my personal and the Diversity mailbox. If there’s nothing urgent to address I usually message Cynthia and Morgan (other graduates) to see if they want to get a coffee. Once I’m back to my desk I usually get straight into my to-do list that I add onto every day to deliver upcoming Diversity events. This usually includes emails, writing briefs, drafting communications, securing room bookings and making phone calls. I always do this in the morning – I am way more focused earlier in the day and it gives me time in the afternoon to have things proofread or cleared.

10.00 AM

I am a member of the Nganana Indigenous Staff Network, we meet every 3-4 weeks to discuss what is going on in the department, events we can attend, suggest ideas on future engagements and other network business. There are members based in various state locations, so it’s really good to get to know staff outside of Canberra. I am usually the secretariat for this meeting.

11.00 AM

Once I get back to my desk, I check my emails again and in between business-as-usual tasks, I write up the minutes from the network meeting. I always write the minutes straight after the meeting so I can remember and include all the important information. I send them off to the Network Chair for clearance.

11.50 AM

One of the girls message me “Level 8 lunch?”

I reply “Yep – see you in 10.”

12.00 PM

This is a tradition for the DVA Grads – Level 8 breakout area is the usual spot to sit together and talk about everything/anything.

1.00 PM

The rest of the day I continue on with planning for events. I send all of the State offices a bag filled with event merchandise for significant Diversity events. I follow up with an email to advise them I’ve sent this through the internal mail and provide additional instructions on how the day will be celebrated. This may include activities for them to encourage staff to participate in or the logistics of the event if we invite an external speaker.

I may have another branch meeting to attend in between.

4.45 PM

My workday usually ends at this time. I catch a bus to my son’s day-care and then drive home.

6.00 PM

Once we get home, the TV is turned on and I’m straight into cooking dinner.

7.30 PM

Once we’ve had dinner it’s shower time again and I’m ready to relax for the rest of the night by watching trashy tv-shows. (Love Island and The Bachelor/Bachelorette are my favourite!!)

9.30 PM

I’m usually in bed and ready to pass out!
