Roslyn Vassiliou

I love the people. I always wanted a job in which I was constantly communicating and learning from others and that is exactly the role I have now! I also have a great manager and I think that makes the biggest impact.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in south Sydney. My whole schooling experience was directed at me ending up as a lawyer however that was not the path I chose. I lived overseas for two years. In 2018 I lived in Denmark completing an exchange program in a Masters of International Law and in 2020 I moved to Prague, Czech Republic for fun. Both experiences taught me to follow my passions, interests and showed me how much can be learned from meeting new people.

How did you get to your current job position?

When I was living in Prague, I applied for a position at DXC Technology as an Associate Project Manager. It was the first time I had applied for a position where I was genuinely interested in the company and the role. I was lucky enough to get the position and have been working for DXC in the Practice for Oracle since February 2021.

How did you choose your specialisation?

I was weighing up following a career in either Law or Accounting. I had received graduate positions in both areas, and was planning to start in March 2020. Though I had these positions lined up, I still found myself searching for other opportunities. I came across DXC Technology and started to read about the extensive positive impact it has on the community and I applied straight away.

What was your interview process like?

My interview process was unconventional. I was overseas in Prague at the time and due to the different time zones, the assessment centre took place from 10pm-3am. I remember three assessments taking place. The first was an exercise with two other applicants, in which we had to come up with an innovative idea and how we would introduce it to market. The second was a written exercise and the third was a one-on-one interview.

What are your areas of responsibility?

I am currently a project co-ordinator on two projects, assisting the project managers. I work with the customer to ensure all information is understood and provided in an accurate and timely manner . I also complete the project financials and complete weekly status reports for the customer. I am also responsible for my own internal project, which involves co-ordinating communications from multiple stakeholders to meet deadlines.

Can you describe a typical work day?

A typical day:

5am – Wake up

5.15am – Breakfast (always oats)

6am – Run

7am – Shower

7.30 – Coffee and news

8am- 5pm

  • Open my laptop, read my emails, flag/reply to the important ones.
  • Observe and update my projects financials for the week.
  • Begin writing and updating the weekly status update for the customer
  • Either work on my own internal project or complete a variety of tasks delegated to me by the project managers. For example:
    • Collate a kick-off pack
    • Create a project schedule
    • Follow up on client communications

What would your career be if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

I would be in media law, my second passion, or a baker, my third passion.

What do you love the most about your job?

I love the people. I always wanted a job in which I was constantly communicating and learning from others and that is exactly the role I have now! I also have a great manager and I think that makes the biggest impact.

The task I enjoy the most would be organising the team site, as it allows my inner perfectionist to shine.

What’s the biggest limitation of your job?

The biggest limitation is my own lack of knowledge. I find that I struggle when others speak ‘technical’, and I can’t follow along. However, I have made everyone aware of this and my own desire to improve it in the future.

I bear the right amount of responsibility for my title, and if I ever get too stressed/ overworked, I can easily tell my manager and he will sort it out.

A word to the wise...

  • The world is your oyster! I used to think my career was limited to either law or accounting but think about what interests you and apply!
  • Get involved – No matter what career path you choose, ask, get involved, set meetings, and learn!
  • Don’t stress –Put things into perspective – your happiness and work-life balance are more important than anything.
