Savita Bhat

As a graduate I have received a wonderful opportunity to work from the day I started. The program is flexible, and a range of training has been provided for graduates to support their professional and personal development.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in India. When I was in primary school, I was very interested in music. Later I completed a Bachelor of Arts and worked as music teacher for a short period of time before moving to Australia. I then completed a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care worked as a Team Leader. I then completed the Certification in Business Administration, and keen to move to the IT sector, I also completed the Certificate IV in Information Technology Testing.

How did you get to your current job position?

I applied for the DXC Technology graduate program and I have been working for DXC in this role for five months.

How did you choose your specialisation?

Based on my previous admin experience, I chose to apply for my current position. I was interested in Software Testing initially, however there weren’t any roles available at the time.

What was your interview process like?

The process involved face-to-face interviews and an Assessment Centre, which was an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to discuss my areas of interest, my past workplace experience, and also the projects I’d be working on.

What does your employer do?

My employer is DXC Technology, a global IT services company.  My role involves working on projects for the Australian Federal Government.

What are your areas of responsibility?

My areas of responsibility include supporting the manager with the end to end release process which involves:

  • Creating release change requests and activities
  • Submitting release requests for approval
  • Planning and scheduling releases
  • Initiating the implementation of releases

Can you describe a typical work day?

I start my work by prioritising my tasks, I look through and reply to urgent emails, and meet with my team leader to update and discuss any issues. I attend weekly stand-up meetings. I monitor release plans, update changes and focus on completing all tasks in the schedule. My day also includes communicating with team members and supporting them to complete their jobs on time.

What are the career prospects with your job?

My goal is to understand change and release management well. My aim is to complete the ITIL Foundation 4 which will be helpful to develop my skills in this sector and eventually lead the team.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, people who are willing to face the challenge can do this job.

What would your career be if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

I would work as an administration officer for the business unit.

What do you love the most about your job?

I enjoy working with the team and supporting them to complete their jobs.  My most favourite thing is QA (Quality Assurance).

What’s the biggest limitation of your job?

The system and process can be challenging to understand. A release cutover plan needs perfection, which can be difficult at this stage. I have a fantastic team I work with, and  am getting the support I need.
