Pros & Cons

  • I love the diversity and openness of the company and its employees!
  • Best thing about EF is the support I got when I first arrived. I had two weeks of hotel paid for, help with setting up a bank account, and was given a Chinese SIM card to help keep in touch with my family. Definitely made it easier to adjust!
  • The support during the Visa process and in training.
  • Adventure, travel - loads of support and career development. Everyone is looking out for you!
  • Community, meeting other people from around the world, teaching the kids also very rewarding
  • During the busy seasons, the teaching hours are a bit longer but the bonuses we receive are nice.
  • Sometimes it’s a bit tough working away from home.
  • Some expectations can be difficult to meet due to the current global climate
  • Salary
  • Haven’t been able to visit my family back home because it is hard for me to re-enter China. But community here is great, so not necessarily a bad thing because everyone is in the same position during COVID

Cool CSR projects in the city like programs to teach those with hearing impairments, or at orphanages. there's also a cool trip to a EF school in Nepal that happens every year that a select few teachers can get invited to (at least, before COVID)

Culture
The company culture is great! I have had the opportunity to make friends from all around the world. Networking and building connections is something EF is certainly good at. They hold a lot of fun events where you can connect and meet with other EF teachers within the city.

There's a DEIB committee here who make sure to challenge any issues or concerns people have. They are very efficient in dealing with that - and I work with people from all over the world at EF

I have developed into a Senior Teacher role since I first started teaching 2 years ago. Day-to day responsibilities would be coming into the centre in the afternoon, have lunch, plan my lessons and activities for the day, catch up on admin work, if any and finally wait for the students to come into the centre around the evening time. Pretty much a normal 8 hour day but teaching for 3-4 hours.

I had one interview that wasn't so stressful. The person interviewing was in China. I remember speaking with them and hearing about their experiences and what life was like in China.

I was nervous to get into the classroom and start teaching because I had never done it before. The first training we received after we arrived in China really prepared me to be a better teacher and feel more comfortable in the classroom.
