Giuliano Bielemeier

Meet Giuliano Bielemeier, Graduate Electrical Engineer at Energy Queensland. He has a keen interest in embedded systems and Internet of Things

What did you study?

A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering – In the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering – at The University of Queensland.

Where are you located? What’s the best thing about your hometown?

I am based at the Newstead office in Brisbane . The best part about living in Brisbane is that there is always something new to do and try.  It is also perfectly placed halfway between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, meaning that a change in scenery is less than an hour’s drive away.

What interests you most about your field?

Embedded systems and the Internet of Things (IoT), which are two emerging technologies that we are seeing being rapidly introduced to the energy industry. These technologies offer exciting prospects for our business and our customers as they can enable safer and more sustainable energy solutions.

What do you like about working here so far?

I really enjoy the diversity of technical disciplines; I started in Telecommunications and worked my way through Protection Standards and now I am in Network Operations.  Each rotation provided its own unique  required skillsets and perspectives on how the distribution network operates.  This has led to some amazing opportunities and career experiences which would not have happened at any other company.

What do you see as the ‘skills of the future’ in the energy industry?

I believe that as we continue our digital transformation, we will be exposed to rich sources of data through the continual integration of intelligent devices across the energy network built on the backbone of IoT.  Understanding the digital age and software development will be critical skills to harness the power of data, as we look to new ways to operate and maintain our distribution network.

How do you want to make an impact?

The energy industry is currently undertaking one of its biggest transformations in more a century, as we move away from traditional generation to more renewable and distributed energy generation. My goal would be to help drive integration of new technologies to enable us to adapt to our ever-changing world while still being able to continue delivering safe, secure, affordable and sustainable energy solutions for our communities and customers.

What do you like to do outside work?

Outside of work I like to spend my time catching up with friends and family by having BBQs at the beach and flying drones.  One of my main hobbies I really enjoy is discovering new cloud technologies and integrating them on my mini datacentre which I use to host my own cloud solutions.

What would you tell a new graduate applying to join the EQL graduate program? What’s it like to be a graduate?

I would tell a new graduate applying to EQL to remember that there is a lot more than just being technically proficient. We must always put our customers centre stage and ensure that work we undertake drives positive outcomes for the business while being committed to energising our local communities.

My experience on the graduate program simply put, is awesome.  The three-year rotation program allows you to professionally develop your skills in a variety of fields while getting support and guidance from some of the best experts in the industry.  You also get to meet some amazing people along the way as you rotate through the various teams allowing you to build connections throughout the business.
