What's your job about?
I work at a consulting firm in the Corporate Finance and Restructuring practice. In the Perth office, I have primarily worked on insolvency-related matters.
The tasks I complete each day vary. A normal day at work could comprise of investigating the affairs of a company, reporting to government bodies such as ASIC and AFSA, liaising with different stakeholders of a company, and writing reports.
What's your background?
I grew up in Perth, Western Australia.
I graduated from high school in 2009 and started university in 2010. I decided to take a double degree at university because I wanted to explore my options. During university I worked as a private piano tutor, and in various retail roles, as well as helping to edit a creative arts journal over several semesters. In the penultimate year of my degree, I completed vacation work at accounting firms and gained an insight into the varied career paths one could take in the accounting industry.
I majored in Accounting and Finance, and Communication Studies at university and decided that I wanted variety in an accounting career. After doing some research and speaking to individuals from different areas of accounting. I decided to apply for insolvency related graduate positions. I have been working in my role for over a year.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Yes. Although the practice of insolvency is typically situated within the accounting field, I have worked with individuals from different backgrounds, including law, property and banking. Skills learned from different areas of study and previous jobs are useful in insolvency. For example, you will need to use your communication skills to liaise with creditors, directors and suppliers and team work skills because you will normally be working with a few different staff members on a matter. Most importantly, you will need excellent organisational and time management skills to juggle different tasks.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
I enjoy investigating the affairs of a Company and identifying ways we can recover funds for the benefit creditors. I also enjoy speaking to, and meeting with different stakeholders. In the case of a company director, you will learn about their background and their motivations for starting a business. If you’re working on a job where a business is still trading, you’ll get to speak directly to staff and assist them with day to day issues that arise in running a business. Finally, every job we work on is different and you’ll learn a lot about how different industries operate. Larger jobs also attract significant media coverage and if you’ve worked on one, it’s exciting to read articles about the work the firm’s undertaken.
What are the limitations of your job?
In insolvency you don’t have set ‘busy periods’ like other accounting service lines. ‘Busy periods’ tend to be unpredictable and at times I will have a higher work load and will have to stay back to complete my work. I’m still in my first year of working at FTI Consulting, and I haven’t had to work a weekend yet.
3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...
- Spend more time on campus.
- Be more active on campus, whether that be joining different groups or participating in more extra-curricular activities.
- Enjoy the flexibility of university life.
