Training & Personal Development at GHD

6.8
6.8 rating for Training, based on 42 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
I transferred departments 1/2 way through my first year. both departments offered VERY different experiences. I received very minimal (if any) formal training in the first department I was in. I was being trained in the field by a graduate who had 3 months experience. Then I transferred and I had a senior shadowing me, then I really began to learn and thrive.

4WD training- organised and went on this very early in, which was great. Group has started drop in sessions, learning technical skills. Informal field training also happens, particularly with flora team

The graduate program could be better - I think a week of training up front would be better than spreading it throughout the year. A lot of the training we did later in the year I could have really used in my first few months when I was struggling with workload...

Lots of opportunities for on the job training as well as other conferences, online training etc.

Almost all my training has come through chargeable work and getting experience. Have not really been provided any other training yet (besides nsw white card)

The informal/on the job training was great however there wasnt really any formal training. Would have been great to know more about drafters/deliverables process as its very important yet no formal training for (and dont get taught it at university).

The formal training is pretty general, not job specific but it gives all the graduates and new starters a good idea of how the company operates. The on the job training has been great. There are a lot of seniors who are happy to teach you and help you develop your skills as long as you ask.

Graduate training is mostly fine, a few standout modules which were very helpful/useful (usually based on great speakers/presenters). Relevant job training is difficult to get funded.

On the job training has been great. I have learnt heaps and am always noticing how much more I know now in just 1 year. The formal graduate program has been a mixed bag. Some of the sessions have been great while others have felt like a waste of time.

Most of the formal training is grad programs where they have people from different disciplines talk to us about topics. The other kind of training is like work done on projects but that is more like completing tasks as such. The best skills I have picked up so far is to do with report writing and admin tasks.

Good learning experience learning on the job. The global grad program hosted across a series of online session lacks engagement and should consider more local and in-person focused events that provide interaction between the grad cohort.

There is not much room for training as it is not chargeable work. I think it would be beneficial to invest more in training people how to do things correctly (especially field work)

The company has good on the job training and I find it easy to reach out to people for help as there is always someone who can help and is willing to. I find past the few beginning sessions, the formal graduate development sessions have added little to no value.

The graduate program could be improved - it could include receiving a business certificate or something more formal to help with improvement

It is harder to attend workshop events/ industry events without the level of experience other people have. It is always preferred for staff that are more senior to attend these events I feel. On the job training is minimal - you pick up most of this just by working on projects.

Mostly informal training or learning through feedback from mistakes. Personally I would have liked a bit more formal guidance

Formal training (such as the PM Training course) that I have been on have been good and useful. As has my on-the-job learning, which has been where I have learned the most by far. However, a large number of iConnect video eLearning's are overly long and have limited value or relationship to my work, in my opinion.

The graduate program has taken us through a number of high level concepts that prove useful, however it would have been good to learn these in a more practical sense. The grad program has been good to establish networks however it also would have been good to see more grad program sponsored social events to strengthen these networks. Informal training has been really strong within and beyond my team - if I've ever been unsure about something, a more senior person has always been keen to teach me what they can and emphasise that our learning is a key priority of theirs.
Graduate, Melbourne
Would like to undertake more training.

I found the linked in training more useful to my role than the GHD internal training. The Word, Mural, Excel and PPT Linked in training modules have been great for allowing me to get things done. Hearing from other graduates, these tools are useful because they are not taught, or emphasised in school, University.
