What's your job about?

Grant Thornton is a vibrant and dynamic supplier to mid-size businesses. We specialise in Audit, Tax and Advisory Services.

I am a graduate accountant in the audit division at our Adelaide office. The tasks I undertake change day-to-day. I usually travel to different clients around the city and spend roughly a week at each client’s office. I gain exposure to a wide range of clients from multiple sectors and listed companies this has helped me get a variety of knowledge and skills.

My main role is to gain assurance that the accounts prepared by the clients are accurate. A typical day for me would include a planning meeting with the partner and managers. This is where we discuss details about the client, what has happened during the year and outline specific tasks each of us will be doing. We then attend the client’s offices. My duties may include vouching general ledger accounts in cash, operating expenses to vouch specific invoices for trade creditors and a general explanation of the movement in expense accounts, employee compensation which involves calculation of holidays and long service leave and GST.

What's your background?

I grew up in a small country town in Victoria called Nhill, with a population of around 2000 people. I attended Nhill College my whole schooling life. When I was 16 I got my first job at the local IGA as a check-out chick. I attended The University of Adelaide and studied a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Corporate Finance. I secured my job at Grant Thornton by undertaking vacation work in my second year of university in the audit department. A few months later I was offered a graduate position and started in April 2016. I got very lucky since the manager of the audit department had actually come from my home town originally so we instantly clicked. The first thing she said to me was that “looking at my resume was like looking at hers” -  she had also worked at the local supermarket!

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is the culture at GT; my colleagues are really supportive and genuine people that definitely care about one another. They offer monthly social club events which enables everyone to bond outside of work hours. The tasks that I enjoy the most include going to do stocktakes, where we count specific lines of stock. It allows you to get a better understanding of the clients business and how they get to the final product on the shelf if it’s a production company.

What are the limitations of your job?

The main limitation of my job would be the busy season and the crazy hours that everyone works during this period. It gets quite exhausting trying to manage multiple jobs at once. I think as a graduate the main challenge is learning in such a fast paced environment. However, this also allows you to gain a wider range of skills and knowledge.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Have faith in yourself and your ability, there is a reason you got this far.
  2. Undertake as many work experience programs as possible. Yes, you will miss out on some of your holidays, and yes, that means getting up earlier, but the experience and knowledge you will gain is invaluable. It is also a great opportunity to find what you are truly passionate about. It will also make finding a graduate position so much easier.
  3. Talk to as many new people as possible, whether it’s people in your class or lecture theatre, you never know when those connections might come in handy later on in life.
