Culture at Henry Davis York

9.4
9.4 rating for Culture, based on 30 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
There is a great culture here with an emphasis on working as part of a team. We also do a lot of social activities outside of work, both formally and informally. This is great for work/life balance.

Culture in the office is very collegiate. Most colleagues are very supportive and appreciate your efforts. Good social atmosphere as well. People genuinely enjoy spending time with one another. I've made some great friends here.

HDY's culture is second to none. They care greatly about their workers, and it truly shows. Not only does that then help us, but in turn, it allows us to perform the highest standard of work for our clients. Afters hours is wonderful, and there are frequent social events on the calendar where the whole firm gets together to unwind and have fun! Hierarchy is not a problem at HDY - everyone helps everyone, and in no way is there a superiority complex.

I am extremely lucky in that the firm says that it strives to create the best culture possible and it genuinely delivers on that commitment. Each of the lawyers in my practice group (and the firm more broadly), from partner level to lawyer level, are genuinely nice people, who like working at the firm and do their utmost to support their colleagues. The partners all have an open door policy and are extremely supportive of lawyers. Genuine friendships amongst lawyers at the firm have developed and continue even after lawyers move on from the firm. The firm does free monthly lunches for all legal staff, as well as a free monthly staff drinks event (which is always a popular event). The practice group I am in has also established a Social Committee which organises monthly events (including beer pong, strike bowling and wine and cheese nights).

One of the main perks of working where I do is the company culture. I feel like I have strong connections both to my graduate group and in the Corporate Group. People are generally approachable, caring and down to earth. After hours I am involved in group activities, work drinks and socialise with colleagues as friends.

Senior colleagues have an obvious interest in my professional and personal development. My colleagues are friendly in and out of the office. It is never a competition between peers. We work as a team to support each other and produce high-quality work.

As with all law firms, there is a relatively rigid structure from the lower ranks to management level. However, the firm does make an effort to encourage juniors to interact with and to seek the support and advice of partners. There is a strong emphasis on team work and my experience has been that most lawyers, and employees, are willing to lend a hand to other teams that are stretched for capacity. There is a strong culture of firm socialising. Beyond the organised events, teams regularly interact to the inclusion of people in other groups.

It is hierarchical but the partners are very approachable. We work very well as a team. My colleagues are great to socialise with.

HDY is famous for its culture. It is known for being a supportive, flexible and fun work environment. People are genuinely invested in your development as a young lawyer but also interested in you as a person. We have monthly Friday night drinks on the rooftop which provides a great opportunity to socialise with colleagues from other groups within the firm. There are great parties too. I am good friends with many of the other junior lawyers, grads and paralegals. We go for coffee walks, lunch, drinks and hang out outside of work. The people at HDY are genuine, down-to-earth, clever and interesting.

Great culture. Very collegiate and rewarding to work as part of a team. To put simply, there are nice people here who are extremely capable professionally and recognised market-leaders but at the same time, nice and approachable on a personal level.

There is a great culture at the firm. Everyone is friendly and although there is a well-founded hierarchy in a working environment, all seniors are extremely understanding and supportive. I enjoy the company of my colleagues.

Very collegiate team where the structural hierarchy is purely to provide support and access to the right level of expertise, rather than a traditional top-down management approach.
