Amanda Lam

By completing my internship at Honeywell, this fast-tracked the pathway for me to apply for the Graduate Program as I already had experience with the company.

What did you study and where?

I studied a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons) at RMIT University (Melbourne and Bundoora Campuses).

What does your role involve?

I work as a Graduate Engineer in Melbourne in Honeywell Building Solutions. I am currently based at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, but I also get to work at other sites in our portfolio such as Southern Cross Station, Etihad Stadium and a few prisons! At the VCCC, I analyse technical issues relating to the performance of the building’s mechanical control system, and implement technical solutions to improve our monitoring and control strategy of (clinical/research) equipment and (mechanical, electrical, etc) services. I also improve processes to ensure each department in the building meets their accreditation requirements.

How did you get your current job?

Honeywell was involved in the RMIT Sustainable Urban Precincts Projects and were looking for an RMIT University student as an intern. I got to work on an engineering project for the university that I was studying at! By completing my internship at Honeywell, this fast-tracked the pathway for me to apply for the Graduate Program as I already had experience with the company.

What personal qualities are required for a person in your position?

The ability to adapt and develop a broad understanding of a range of areas – I am exposed to Facility Management, Project Management, Compliance, Commercials, Mechanical, Electrical, Security, Building Controls, and IT Networks just to name a few.

What advice would you give to a student?

Get as much industry experience as possible whilst you’re still in university (it doesn’t have to be in your desired field), find a mentor who’s career path you aspire to, and make strong connections with the people in your degree as you may be working alongside them in the future!
