Negar Kamyar

6.46 AM

I wake up and hit snooze a couple of times while I swim back to consciousness! I have a light breakfast and then get ready to drive to the Honeywell office while grooving to some of my favourite tunes.

8.30 AM

Once I reach my desk, I try and get ahead of the game by taking care of emails until 9.00 am, when my colleagues start trickling in. That means it’s time to grab coffee and have a short ‘walk and talk’ with the gang, which is a great way to start the day.

Back at my desk, it’s time for a remote call with global teams. We discuss the projects each team is working on and make sure we’re all on the same page where they intersect. One of the reasons I love working at Honeywell is chatting to people from all over the world.

I also meet with the development teams. We work according to an agile scrum system and usually one or two UX designers manage a ‘dev’ team, and they can ask us any UX related questions they have about the ‘sprint’ works.

10.00 AM

At 10.00 am, I plan my tasks for the rest of the day. I usually split them into two groups, short term and long term. It helps me manage my time more efficiently and make sure nothing gets away from me! Then I get to work.

We always hold a ‘stand-up’ at 11.00 am. This is a quick, casual meeting during which everyone shares what they achieved yesterday, what’s happening today and any ‘blockers’ to success, so everyone can pitch in with ideas on solving them.

Lunch – of course, one of my favourite parts of the day! Even if it’s just 30 minutes, I try to sit outside to get some fresh air and chat with others from different parts of the company. My eyes also need a reboot from staring at the screen.

Time to hit the whiteboard, hard! My role right now is about developing new concepts. We’ll come up with concepts as a team, using insights from research to find possible solutions for pain points or a new feature, while keeping business goals and user needs at the forefront. I find whiteboarding and sketching is how I get the most ideation done. That, and coffee!

After coming up with the first design concept, the next step is to have a meeting with my teammates to present my work and get their valuable early feedback. I love this part of the process because sometimes I get surprised by how inspiring everyone's insight is. Teamwork makes the dream work!

After sharing insights, we plan how to move forward. I head off to apply my changes to our existing design documents. Now it’s time for usability testing…

I love testing the designs with real/potential users. I review sessions with our managers and then we organise a time to test them and get more feedback. That’s why UX design is a collaborative design process!

5.30 PM

By 5.30 pm, I’m ready to start winding down. At the end of the day, I’ll look at what’s happening tomorrow and write my to-do list for the next day. I hit the gym straight after work.

7.00 PM

After a shower, I have dinner while watching my favourite series (also known as ‘Netflix and chill’)! I have an online music class three times a week, so also allocate thirty minutes every evening to practice.

10.00 PM

I make my lunch for the next day and get ready to hit the hay. At around 10.00 pm, it’s lights out for this UX soldier!
