Don’t be afraid to share your opinions and ideas. We all come from different walks of life so our experiences will affect how we problem-solve.

What's your job about?

The Fire and Security business division of Honeywell is responsible for manufacturing and selling fire alarm systems and security systems for commercial buildings. I am currently the Customer Marketing Graduate within this team. As a Customer Marketer at Honeywell, my role involves a variety of responsibilities such as devising marketing plans, project management and campaign execution.

On a typical day, I would be juggling the preparation for multiple campaigns and events. I start everyday by answering emails either replying to customers, such as reseller, who I may be collaborating with for a campaign or key stakeholders within the company. Then my day proceeds with calls and meetings to plan and brainstorm for the marketing activities. These marketing activities are quite diverse and vary from industry tradeshows, webinars to LinkedIn ads and flyers.

What's your background?

I have been based in Melbourne for all my life. I grew up in the south-eastern suburbs but have recently adjusted to the city life.

Growing up, I never really knew what I wanted to do but I had many interests. When I first started university, I studied a double degree in commerce and engineering for two years. However, I decided to make the switch to a course with a lighter workload as I needed to dedicate more time to a family situation at home. I took this opportunity to try something creative and studied a double degree in business and design for a year. This came with its own challenges as although I enjoyed studying design, I chose to pursue a life of stability which I realised was something I valued. In the end I settled with a Bachelor of Commerce with a double major and haven’t looked back since.

Even though I didn’t become an economist after my degree, I am thankful that it has opened doors to opportunities such as Honeywell.

I have been at Honeywell for over a year a now as a graduate and joined through an online application. When I applied for Honeywell, it was not a company I was very familiar with, but it re-sparked my interest in engineering and kickstarted my career within the engineering and technology industry which hope to continue to work in.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, definitely! My background is quite quantitative and analytical but if you are flexible and willing to learn you can do this job. Other skills which will are very valuable are being very organised, good time management skills and high attention to detail. Your mind set is also very crucial. Keeping an open mind and trying new things will help with the creative process and being customer orientated will help with staying focused and intentional with your marketing campaigns.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Being involved in every aspect of a marketing campaign something I enjoy. It has allowed me to develop my project management skills and enabled me to collaborate with industry experts within the company. It has been great for networking and getting advice and mentoring from established professionals. I have also had the opportunity to be creative within my tasks such as through graphic design and conceptualising a campaign.

What are the limitations of your job?

I’m currently in a graduate role at Honeywell, however, the company encourages autonomy within the role. As my team is based in Sydney it is a limitation when it comes to collaborative work. It is easy to lose focus when leading projects as it requires additional administrative tasks such as setting up regular cadence and following others up for their deadlines.

Honeywell is also a global company, and we rely on other parts of the business in different cities across the globe to complete different tasks. This means dealing with the time differences when connecting with global contacts and dialling into early morning or late-night meetings.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  1. Be more specific about what you want in out of life! It’s okay if this changes in the future. Deciding on a direction for now will motivate you towards reaching your short-term goals while you figure out what you really want long-term.
  2. Don’t be afraid to share your opinions and ideas. We all come from different walks of life so our experiences will affect how we problem-solve.
  3. Ask more questions, even if you think they’re dumb. Others probably want to ask the same question, but they don’t have the courage to ask. There is no harm in asking and it will also help to facilitate insightful discussion.
