Daniel Di Roberto

I believe having a fundamental understanding of how a building goes together in all its complexity is extremely important, and what I enjoy engaging with the most.

Why did you decide to join the construction industry?

Initially my interest with the construction industry was sparked at a young age as I was around a number of small home-renovating projects. This interest developed as I got older as I began to recognise the problem solving, technical and management aspects of construction.

The opportunity to create a functional and aesthetic space that people will utilise and enjoy for years to come was also significant contributing factor in my decision to join the construction industry. The sense of creation and understanding of minor details within a larger context are characteristics of the industry that align with my personal interests.

The construction industry also provides countless opportunities for career progression as well as providing a platform to develop fundamental skills and knowledge required within many facets of this industry.

Why did you choose to join Icon?

I decided to apply for an undergraduate position within Icon as they offered the culture of a close, family orientated company, whilst also providing the opportunity to work on large scale and very complex construction projects.

What things have you really enjoyed doing at work?

Getting involved in all facets of the construction process, whether it be working through the tendering process, establishing relationships with contractors, consultants and clients or working with colleagues to develop my knowledge and skills. I have also particularly enjoyed any opportunity to be involved in problem solving and the development of solutions to on-site challenges.

The opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills in a number of different areas (rather than being pigeonholed), is also something I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and has added a great deal of knowledge and value to my experience here.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced on site?

Time management is a challenging element on-site, as the building coordinator role encompasses many different responsibilities and tasks. Moreover, prioritising these tasks can be difficult due to the ever-changing nature of live construction sites and the work associated with this.

Another challenging aspect within the construction industry is effectively managing relationships between numerous stakeholders, who at times have vastly differing personalities. Being able to effectively communicate with each of these stakeholders is critical in ensuring understanding between all parties and ultimately facilitating project success.

Can you describe some of the key things that you have learned since you joined the company?

In my current position I’ve been directly involved in tendering, managing trade packages, safety, quality, client side relations and general project administration. This has allowed me to develop a broad understanding of the entire construction process, as well as provide me with the opportunity to determine which areas of construction management I enjoy and would like to specialise in going forward.

This has enabled me to develop a strong understanding of how the construction industry operates in a variety of different facets, including:

  • Industrial relations
  • Tendering best practices
  • Workplace health and safety
  • Contractor, consultant and client relations
  • Construction best practises and buildability

I believe having a fundamental understanding of how a building goes together in all its complexity is extremely important, and what I enjoy engaging with the most. This is achieved through actively getting on-site and observing the physical works and processes being undertaken.

How would you describe the team environment?

Icon has a great team environment throughout the organisation. As a graduate building coordinator I feel very comfortable discussing work or having a laugh with many members of senior management. Additionally, a friendly and welcoming nature is very present throughout the company.

What makes you proud to work at Icon?

Working at such a diverse, multifaceted company which provides excellent opportunities for growth and development, as well as the reputation Icon maintains within the construction industry for exceptional professionalism to clients and contractors alike.

What advice would you give to new Graduates or Cadets joining the team?

Embrace all learning opportunities that are provided and don’t be afraid to speak up when you need a hand. Every time you don’t know something there is someone happy to help, whether it be a manager, colleague or contractor.

What do you do in your spare time?

Spending time with family and friends, as well as having a casual run around playing footy, basketball, tennis or golf. I’m also big Collingwood supporter, so football occupies most of my weekends during winter (and the rest of the year)!
