Provide an overview of all your rotations to date:
During the Graduate Program, I have worked on the New Intercity Fleet Maintenance Facility (NIFMF). I completed all three of my rotations while working on the project.
My rotations have covered design management, earthworks, roads, utilities
and buildings.
What does your typical workday look like?
Typical Monday:
6.50 am – Arrive at Site
7.00 am – Prestart
7.30 am – Site Walk/ Solve any outstanding site issues
9.00 am – Go over emails/submit any RFI’s
10.00 am – Weekly Team Meeting
11.00 am – Technical Work (preparing for upcoming works)
1.30 pm – Site Meeting with Engineers, Supervisors, and Superintendents
2.00 pm – Four weeks look ahead with responsible Engineers and Senior Management
3.00 pm – Site walk
4.30 pm – Emails/Quality/RFIs (anything outstanding for the day)
5.30 pm – Leave the site
What has been the most interesting thing about your job?
The most interesting thing about my job is being able to solve any issues on the spot and if I can’t find the answer immediately, working with subject matter experts to resolve the issue.
What are the limitations of your role?
The greatest limitation of my role is managing my work-life balance. Coming up towards the end of the Graduate Program, my responsibilities and workload have significantly increased. Being ambitious, it is easy to put 100% focus into work and let things such as social life and exercise slip.
What is something you wish you knew before you started?
Before I started working, the industry hours were quite intimidating. I wish that I knew how flexible workplaces can be. Now I am wishing there were more hours in the day to get my work done!
How did you prepare for starting on the Graduate Program?
I spoke to as many people as I could within the industry (Construction and Design) so that I could gain an understanding of the calibre of work I would be undertaking and get as many tips as I could for my initial steps into construction.
