About K&L Gates

  • Law

K&L Gates is one of the largest law firms in the world with offices located across five continents sharing one clear vision. We are a fully integrated network of lawyers and legal professionals who believe that clients need more than technical legal skills; they need insightful and practical advice on the diverse issues that affect their businesses, delivered with unparalleled client service. Our combination of practice strength, global platform, and unsurpassed client service is a true differentiator in the legal services marketplace.

Our client-first approach extends beyond our firm’s internal structure and examines the broader legal, industry, and regulatory trends. Our lawyers are exceptionally skilled at identifying issues in advance based on deep industry knowledge, but we are even better at helping clients solve them.

We are leading legal advisors relating to industries critical to the economies of both the developed and developing worlds – technology, manufacturing, energy, transportation, telecommunications, financial services, and life sciences, among others.

With a strong presence in key capital cities and world commercial and financial centers, we represent a broad array of Global 500, Fortune 100, and FTSE 100 corporations in nearly every major industry, including technology, manufacturing, energy, transportation, telecommunications, financial services, health care, life sciences, sustainable development, and infrastructure, among others.

With the extraordinary inbound investment into Australia from Asia, especially from China, and four of Australia's five largest trading partners – China, Japan, Korea, and India – located in the region, the firm has the resources on the ground to handle the most sophisticated legal requirements.

We have nine key practice areas on our global platform:

  • Corporate and Transactional
  • Energy, Infrastructure and Resources
  • Finance
  • Financial Services
  • Intellectual Property
  • Labour, Employment and Workplace
  • Litigation and Dispute Resolution
  • Policy and Regulatory

Culture

Practising commercial law challenges all lawyers in so many ways. The rewards of developing commercial experience, long-lasting relationships with colleagues and clients are realised through hard work, persistence and passion for the work that you do.

At K&L Gates, we talk openly about the potential impact that work and lifestyle can have on wellbeing and encourage everyone to understand their own limits as well as lookout for others. We encourage everyone to proactively manage their wellbeing and put in place strategies for themselves. The firm offers sporting activities through its Sports Club, connection with others through its Social Club as well as flexible working to enable the balance between life needs and work.

Our Graduate Program

Our graduate program is designed to give you the technical expertise and commercial context to succeed. Throughout the year you are supported with a buddy, supervisor and mentor. Partners and senior lawyers will support and guide you through each rotation and support your career development.

Your professional development program runs weekly. It combines Practical Legal Training (delivered in-house by the College of Law) with sessions presented by partners, lawyers, external presenters and our professional development team.

  • Excellent culture. I get an excellent mix of support but am provided with plenty of opportunities to extend myself and be involved on interesting matters.
  • You are free to be yourself. Your colleagues are generally open minded, laidback and non-judgmental. I feel supported in my team.
  • A collegial environment, a good group of young lawyers who have good camaraderie, smaller teams with opportunities to excel at a junior level.
  • A wide and varied range of high-quality work and the trust and autonomy to develop and apply skills.
  • The level of active involvement you have with clients and partners from day 1 and the trust the partners have in you.
  • No huge issues - perhaps could be more progressive and more generous with bonuses etc.
  • There tends to be a lack of transparency between firm policies and how they are implemented e.g. budgets and pay.
  • The hours can be a bummer.
  • No proper international secondment program despite being an international firm.
  • Lack of resources and slow administrative process.
