The Mondelēz International story

Mondelēz was established in 2012 when Kraft Foods Inc., an American multinational food, confectionery, and beverage conglomerate, announced plans to split into two: a grocery business in North America and a faster-growing global snacks company. The snacks company, officially recognised as Kraft Food’s legal successor, was named Mondelēz, and the grocery company was named Kraft Foods.

Mondelēz International is one of the world’s largest snack companies in terms of market share. As of 2018, it trailed just a bit behind PepsiCo which has 7.6% of the market versus Mondelēz’s 7.4%. Mondelēz owns some of the most well-known and respected snack brands such as Cadbury, Oreos, Trident, and Toblerone. Chocolate and biscuits make up most of the company’s sales.

Mondelēz’s brands are divided into five categories. Chocolate and biscuits, its two largest products, account for around 75% of the company’s total revenue. The remaining categories are candy & gum, beverages, and cheese & grocery.

The company has a strong global presence. It has 130 processing and manufacturing facilities in around 50 countries, 120 distribution centres, and technical centres for product development in China, India, Poland, the UK, Singapore, the US, Poland, Germany, France, and Brazil. The company’s presence in Europe generates 40% of its total revenue, while its American, AMEA, and Latin American representations make up 25%, 20%, and 10% of sales respectively.

More health-conscious consumer attitudes have spurred the company to revamp its portfolio and create healthier alternatives as part of its strategy, however, the snacks brand has still seen flat revenue over the past three years after two years of declines. Since 2014, the company's revenue is down by 24%. Net income rises and falls, but it has been growing over the last three years to 20%. This growth was attributed to the change in the company's ownership stake in Keurig Green Mountain right after its merger with Dr Pepper Snapple Group.

Today, Mondelēz sells its snacks, beverages, and candy through wholesalers, supercentres, supermarket chains, distributors, warehouse clubs, drug stores, convenience stores, mass merchandisers, and other retail food outlets.

The recruitment process

The recruitment process varies from role to role, but the standard hiring procedure begins with online submission of applications. This is followed by a ‘pre-selection’ phase usually conducted via an online or telephone call. Promising applicants will be invited for a series of face-to-face onsite or virtual interviews with the recruitment manager and/or department managers. Depending on your role, you may be requested to complete a project or presentation.

Remuneration

Previous workers reported a higher-than-average salary, discounts on company products, health insurances and yearly check-ups, and a 'generous' amount of leave.

The culture

Flexible work options create a positive and stress-free environment. Depending on your position, a variety of flexible work options are available including work from home, part-time, or job-sharing arrangements. Although previous employees praised the company's fun and inclusive workplace and 'supportive' managers, work-life balance may be an issue.

Social contributions

Shubh Aarambh, Mondelēz India's corporate social responsibility arm and community program, focuses on the integrated development of youth by promoting education, disaster rehabilitation, volunteerism, health education, and gender equality, among others.

The program is active around the company's manufacturing site operations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Over the next few years, the initiative is expected to help more than 200,000 beneficiaries in seven states. Shubh Aarambh's NGO partners include Magic Bus, AFPRO, and Save the Children.

The vibe of the place

Mondelēz offers attractive benefits, flexibility, and prestige to freshers lucky enough to join its pool of talented employees, but as a multinational company during strategic change, previous workers reported confusion in priorities leading to convoluted processes, slow-decision making, and unorganised workflow.
