Product & Markets Graduate
Adrian C, Monash University, BCom/BEc
How did you end up at NAB and in the Graduate Program?
I have always been interested in starting my career in the banking industry – so naturally I applied for the NAB Graduate Program. It was during the final assessment centre that I knew NAB was the perfect place for me to work. I was instantly hooked by the culture I felt flowing through the bank. There was a very strong sense of joint vision, passion for learning and customer focus. I actually found myself getting very excited during the final interview as I knew this was the right place for me to work.
Tell us about the work you’ve been doing so far.
The work I’ve been doing has been extremely varied. I’ve spent time in both the Small Business Lending Product and Financial Market Services Teams, as part of my first 2 rotations.
During my time in the Small Business Lending Product Team, I was able to develop very strong skills in Product Management. I was given the opportunity to help manage specific product initiatives end-to-end. This was fantastic as I was able to engage with key stakeholders from all over the bank – Risk, Marketing, Change Management, Credit and the various distribution channels. I was also given many opportunities to meet with frontline bankers and understand how product change impacts them in their everyday work.
My time in the Financial Market Services has mostly been spent providing operational support to the various service desks within the team – Securities Lending, Bonds, Term Deposits and Foreign Exchange. This has been a fantastic opportunity to learn how financial markets operate and the way large institutions play a part in them.
I’ve also had the opportunity to spend considerable time amongst various customer facing functions throughout the bank; including Business Banking Centres, Call Centres, Financial Crime Services and Social Media. I’ve absolutely loved this aspect of the Graduate Program. It is truly fantastic to meet and understand our customers.
Do you get to be yourself at work?
The answer to this question is an overwhelming yes. For me, this is one of the big reasons why I love my job. I honestly do feel that I get to bring my whole self to work – personality, new ideas and general interests. My people leaders have been very keen to hear about what my broader interests are and have actively encouraged me to explore other areas of the bank that are of interest to me.
Do you still get to enjoy a life outside of work?
Yes I absolutely do. NAB definitely encourages strong work-life balance. Despite being in my first full-time role, I still have plenty of time for socializing, fitness and hobbies. There’s also a very strong social scene amongst the graduates.
What would you say to someone that is interested in applying to the NAB Graduate Program?
I would say the NAB Graduate Program is perfect for those who love to be challenged every day and have a passion for learning. To prepare, I would definitely recommend practicing responding to interview questions.
