Don’t be afraid to jump into a job with the fear it might not be right for you, it is the only way to find what actual career is the one for you.

What's your job about?

North Construction & Building are a medium sized Commercial building company who specialise in construction on Schools, Hospitals, Office Spaces etc. for private Clients, we act as the Principal Contractor, and therefore manage Subcontractors to complete the works.

I am a Contracts Administrator, and my role entails; awarding contracts to Subcontractors, liaise with the Client regarding Variation, Extensions of Time, Requests for Information etc. and ultimately ensure that the Company is getting paid from our Client, and that we are paying our Subcontractors.

What's your background?

I grew up on the Central Coast of NSW. I would say firstly High School, and then secondly the full time job I attained 1 year out of year 12 and have been working in since.

I attained my current position firstly through a 12 week scholarship programme that was offered through the university. I completed this programme with 4 other candidates and was lucky enough to be offered full time employment and have been working with North for 3 years.

I believe the 12 week scholarship programme helped me come to a realisation that this industry is the path I want to pursue for the remainder of my career. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do coming out of Year 12, so finding the right degree, career and essentially job 12 months out is something I am extremely proud of.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Absoluelty, the Construction industry is extremely diverse and as long as you have the drive and motivation to do the best you can and learn as much as possible, anyone can do the role I currently undertake.

In order to work as a Contracts Administrator, you need to be extremely resilient, and in addition to this if you are a self-motivated and driven person this will significantly benefit your ability in the role.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Being a contracts administrator is extremely rewarding as you are able to physically see the results of your hard work when you head out of the office and onto site. There are plenty of early mornings and late nights spent in the office, and a lot of stress endured during that time, however you are in a team who are all pushing for the same goal.

What are the limitations of your job?

As a contracts administrator you do bear a lot of responsibity and everyone in your team relies on you to do your part. It can be full on at times, however if you are able to be resilient through the tough times, the good times are all that much better.
