I’m a law graduate with experience in legal research and policy writing. In my current placement I have been coordinating briefs on highlights and hot topics to prepare the Treasurer and Treasury leadership team for hearings on proposed 17/18 budget and past spendings. In my last rotation I assisted in analysing business cases and drafting briefs for some major transport and environment projects.
The Treasury, as a central government agency, looks after our State’s finance. It is probably one of the most advantageous places to start your career as a graduate in public service. You will be involved in areas across government and gain exposure to some major projects that may involve hundred of millions in spendings. Your analysis of a business case may ultimately affect government decisions. This is why the Treasury needs people with great problem solving skills and an innovative mind to best serve the people of NSW inside an age of rapid technological advancements and radically new business models.
I grew up in Shanghai and came to Sydney with my parents. Being a first generation migrant ultimately shaped my values. Perseverance and humility will get you far. I studied Arts at university where I went on exchange to Udine for Italian language studies. I also studied law and went to Kyoto to study Japanese law one winter. I have been a long time volunteer at Inner City Legal Centre, a community legal centre providing free advice on minor civil and criminal matters for socio-economically disadvantaged inner city residents. I sit in with solicitors on advice evenings, assisting with notetaking. It is an interesting and fulfilling role; being exposed to people’s hardships keeps me grounded. I’m glad I can have role in assisting people in some of their direst hours.
In my current rotation, our team is busily preparing for the upcoming budget estimates hearings which the Treasurer and witnesses from the leadership team will attend. I coordinate briefing notes across all Treasury branches, their purpose is to inform the Treasurer of each branch’s highlights and hot topics. My job allows me to liaise with many senior figures, improve professional presentation and gain understanding of whole of Treasury operations. Being able to assist the Treasury and our minister preparing for this major event makes me proud of what I’m doing everyday!
In my previous rotation, I was given the opportunity to analyse business proposals and draft advice and comments on some major transport and environment projects including the Parramatta Light Rail and the Climate Change Fund. Seeing what you’ve written being approved and used by your director to brief senior executives gives you a great sense of achievement.
