  • Flights and accommodation provided if based outside of Sydney
  • 12-week internship over summer

What you'll work on

FPGAs are critical in executing successful trades. With no external clients, we operate in a fast feedback, quick release environment. You'll work in a close knit, multidisciplinary team to design and develop accurate, efficient devices that solve real business problems. You'll also:

  • Take ownership of a project with tangible business value
  • Explore new mechanisms for faster data communication/processing to accelerate network infrastructure and trading systems
  • Work with the fastest devices/platforms in a highly competitive industry
  • Develop rigorous test benches using a combination of VHDL and System Verilog
  • What you'll learn

We're proud of our rigorous, high-quality tech bootcamp. Don't know anything about finance? No problem. Unfamiliar with software systems? We've got you. Our dedicated Head of IT Education built a program to equip you with the knowledge and skills to set you up for success.

You'll be a fully integrated Optiverian during your time with us. You'll build relationships across the business by working with our Trading, Risk and Research teams, and more personally at the likes of Friday night drinks and board game nights. If you've excelled over the summer and shown us your potential, we'll invite you to join us as a Graduate FPGA Developer!

Who you are

At heart, you're a problem solver. You don't stop until you've figured out a solution and then found a way to improve it even further. In addition, you're:

  • Knowledgeable about HDL languages: VHDL and/or Verilog as well as some experience with Python and/or C++
  • Familiar with FPGA logic elements, transceivers, memory and other on-chip resources
  • Understand network protocols: Ethernet, IP, TCP/UDP
  • Keen to create high-performance, low-latency designs that critically impact trading success
  • Curious to learn and have a firm grasp of electronic digital designs concepts
  • Deeply passionate about technology, particularly FPGA hardware, and have a range of out-of-classroom projects or activities to prove it
  • Keen to work alongside the best Developers and Traders in the industry, with the humility to continually challenge yourself to improve and grow

Eligibility

  • A penultimate year university student, graduating mid or end of 2021
  • Studying a Computer Science, Software/Electrical/Mechatronic Engineering or similarly technical degree
  • An Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or able to provide evidence of full working rights for the duration of the Internship

Who we are

Optiver. It's a combination of the Dutch words for 'trading' and 'options'. And that's what we do. We're a leader in Options trading (and other financial products) on the world's financial markets.

At Optiver, we do things a bit differently to most businesses. We operate without clients, taking risks and reaping the rewards ourselves. We maintain an informal culture to make sure it's fun. We skip the mindless meetings and get on with it. And we celebrate high performance, individual excellence and doing better every day. We take serious things very seriously - like chasing wins and embracing the challenges of the market. We collaborate to solve open-ended problems in the most competitive market there is. We're about fast feedback and speedy solutions. Since we take the risk, we reap the rewards. And that's just how we like it. We collaborate to innovate. We share knowledge, ideas and the glory when everything goes right.

More than 1000 Optiverians around the world work to improve the market. Optiver's a quiet powerhouse of creative problem solving and collaboration. We like challenges. We love success. And we're proud of our culture, designed to give you plenty of opportunity and support to do amazing things.

What we offer

Optiver believes in getting better every day. Our internal learning and development programs are designed to help you get to the next level. With in-house experts, a structured learning program and plenty of opportunities to learn as you work, you're always developing new skills. Which helps when you're solving the most interesting problems in the world.

Optiver is a truly high performing environment. We make life easy for you by taking care of the little things. Like lunch, which our in-house chefs prepare every day. And coffee, free from our barista. And fitness, with your free gym membership and access to group training sessions. There are massages every week, meditation training and lots of wellness perks. There are also plenty of ways to unwind, from our famous games room and social clubs to our many internal sports teams. And with a culture that celebrates wins, you can bet that from our monthly social events, annual trip, Christmas party and more, you'll find time to meet your fellow Optiverians and enjoy a party or two.

Does this sound like the future you're looking for? Take up the challenge and apply today!

We recruit on a rolling basis so the sooner you apply, the sooner you could secure your internship!

Optiver embraces diversity and encourages applications from people with disability. Candidates will have the opportunity to request support or reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process in order to demonstrate their ability to meet the inherent requirements of the job.

At Optiver, we're aware of how much disruption has resulted from the COVID-19 outbreak. And we're committed to being as fluid as possible, so we can accommodate these disruptions and give everyone a fair chance to join us. We know things have been hectic. So we're leaving our graduate and internship applications open a little longer.

That doesn't mean you should be complacent, though! We're reviewing applications on a rolling basis. So the faster you get yours in, the faster we'll be able to put you through the process and see if there's a home for you here! We're still taking applications across all roles, so don't miss your chance to join us as an intern or graduate.
