  • Perfect opportunity to gain exposure to a real-life trading floor
  • No prior finance knowledge required
  • $100K + super pro-rata, plus an abundance of perks and benefits
  • Flights and accommodation provided if based outside of NSW
  • 10-week internship over summer

What you'll work on

Apply your quantitative and technical skills to solve the multitude of challenging problems that enable trading success.

Over the 10 weeks, you'll participate in a highly interactive derivative theory training course that covers extensive trading principles and concepts, delivered by our Head of Trader Education. Once you've got the basics covered, you'll start trading in our simulated trading environment on a live copy of the financial markets (the same information used by our Traders!). To deepen your understanding of trading, you'll get to work alongside other Trader, Researcher and Software Engineer Interns to develop your own Trading algorithm.

What you'll learn

We're known for the quality and rigour of our Trader training. After the program, you'll have a solid theoretical and practical understanding of life as a Quantitative Trader. You'll be mentored by our Head of Trading Education who will support your growth and provide valuable feedback. You'll also learn and apply Python programming skills, which are highly sought after in the market.

You'll be a fully integrated Optiverian during your time with us. You'll get the chance to meet our people and build relationships across the business at professional and social events like Friday night drinks, board game nights and more. If you've excelled over the summer and shown us your potential, you'll be invited to join us as a Graduate Trader!

Who you are

You're a lateral thinker, quick to apply your brand of maths to understand quantitative problems. Our traders tend to have an interest in a variety of activities that could be classed as quantitatively challenging, fast-paced, competitive or analytically rigorous. We're also strong believers in the power of collaborative problem-solving. You may already be passionate about trading, or it may have only recently piqued your interest.

One of Optiver's key strengths is our breadth of trading strategies. We recruit for a variety of skillsets, and through the training program, we'll identify which of the following areas you best fit.

1) Options Market Maker

You love puzzles, predictions and problem-solving. You're always hungry to learn. You're driven to understand the why, and you're also comfortable making decisions under uncertainty. You have a real passion for quantitative problems and a flair for numbers.

2) Delta 1 Trader

You have a love for statistical analysis and deriving insights from big data sets. You enjoy microanalysis and applying those insights to the bigger picture. You're likely more comfortable with a slower pace of work, but still, retain a competitive spirit and drive to succeed.

3) Wholesale Trader

Building rapport comes naturally to you. You enjoy developing strong relationships and you don't take yourself too seriously. You have amazing communication skills and remain focused under pressure. You're passionate about quantitative problems and have a flair for numbers. And you have an inherent drive to work in a fast-paced, sometimes uncertain environment.

Eligibility

  • A penultimate / pre-penultimate year university student
  • An Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or able to provide evidence of full working rights for the duration of the Internship

Being a market maker is about providing liquidity to the financial markets. That means we always need to show prices at which we’d buy and sell.
