The Pitcher Partners story
When Pitcher Partners was launched in late 1991, it was the first new financial services practice to be established in Australia in two decades. At a time of get-big-or-get-out merger mania, and in the midst of a recession, 14 partners and 142 staff, largely from Hungerfords and KPMG, came together in Melbourne to create a smallish firm focused on servicing middle-market clients. (Ron Pitcher, a KPMG high-flyer, played a crucial role, hence the name.)
Despite high interest rates and tanking stock and property markets, the firm was a success from the get-go generating billings of over $14 million in its first year.
That initial success was to continue, more or less unabated, for the next quarter of a century. The business now comprises a national association made up of member firms in Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle, Perth and Sydney. Pitcher Partners is also a member of Baker Tilly International, a network of accountancy and business advisory firms that spans more than 150 nations.
Pitcher Partner firms now provide professional services in “audit and assurance, business advisory, business recovery and insolvency, consulting, corporate finance, investment advisory, private clients, risk services, superannuation and taxation”.
In the 2015-16 financial year, the firm had revenues of $198 million.
One of the ‘Four Pillars’ that Pitcher Partners is built on is “to care for employees on an individual basis and provide them with great careers”. The firm tries hard to make life easier for those with responsibilities outside of work. The firm provides “postgraduate study support, time in lieu, part-time opportunities, salary packaging options, career breaks and secondment opportunities, flexible work arrangements, childcare options, parental leave, additional packaged leave and study leave”.
While Pitcher Partners doesn’t publicly trumpet it, current and former employees attest to the firm having a diverse workforce with a focus on inclusion.
Pitcher Partners is big on caring for its customers, its employees and the community it is part of. Staff are given a day’s paid volunteer leave each year. They are “actively encouraged” to take part in charitable events and help out with community care programs. The firm also offers pro-bono services to several of its not-for-profit clients.
The firm’s staff have been particularly active in supporting the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Breakfast Club and Nepal’s Omni House. (The latter houses and supports the education of children, as well as operating a women’s handicraft centre.)
Pitcher Partners is a network of independent firms, meaning you’ll need to apply to a specific firm (e.g. Pitcher Partners Melbourne) rather than a central HR department. Individual firms typically offer intern and vacation programs to students in their second-last year of uni. (You should consider doing one of these if you’re hoping to get into the grad program later on.)
While no degree requirements are specified, to be eligible for the 12-month grad program it appears you’ll need to have completed the type of accounting or accounting-related degree that will allow you to go on to become a CA or CPA and get Tax Institute of Australia Foundation Course accreditation.
Pitcher Partner firms look for candidates who “are passionate and committed to self-development, possess excellent interpersonal skills, can demonstrate initiative, and are keen on working with interesting small to medium enterprises”. You’ll also need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
While it may vary from firm to firm, the recruitment process will consist of an online application, which will involve uploading your resume and academic transcript. If you make the shortlist, you’ll be invited to do an online aptitude test, attend an hour-long information session and/or an assessment centre and do a 30-minute interview. If all that goes well, you’ll receive an offer.
Once again, details may vary from firm to firm but those accepted into the grad program can expect to be invited to pre-commencements events. (Think morning teas, group functions and even the office Christmas party.) They’ll then undertake a week-long induction program before getting down to business. Grads receive technical training, especially in relation to software programs. They also take part in professional development sessions in areas such as career development, communication, networking and planning. They are also supported while they get certified by external bodies and institutions.
As a grad, you can expect an industry competitive salary. Of course, there is the opportunity to make big money later in your career, especially if you make partner.
Unusually for a professional services firm, Pitcher Partners doesn’t expect staff to donate unpaid overtime. If you rack up the chargeable hours on a deadline, you get a commensurate amount of time in lieu. The firm also encourages staff to stay in good shape. They offer internal yoga and Pilates classes, provide healthy food and subsidise gym memberships and involvement in sporting events. Those staff interested in less healthy activities can enjoy monthly events put on by their firm’s Social Club, as well as Pitcher Partner’s lavish Annual Ball and Christmas party.
Pitcher Partner firms encourage all their staff to “carve out a career path of their choosing, assisted by a flexible, supportive working environment”.
Both during the program and after it, grads can look forward to driving their career forward through “close interaction with our partners, as well as technical training and professional development from one of the largest learning and development programs in the industry”. Generous support is provided for those undertaking postgrad study (especially the CA and CPA courses).
Through the Baker Tilly network, secondments are available to firms based in Asia, Europe, North America and the UK.
The vibe of the place
Pitcher Partners walks the walk as well as talking the talk when it comes to treating staff well and has a bulging trophy case full of industry awards to prove it. As a grad, you can expect to work hard but you’ll get lots of exposure to different areas of the business and the opportunity to do a variety of tasks. You’ll find teamwork and collaboration are encouraged. While a clear hierarchy exists, you should find your colleagues friendly and encouraging.
