Steven Clark

7.20 AM

I wake up, get out of bed and get ready for work. If I have a client facing meeting I’ll wear my suit. Otherwise, I’ll opt for chinos and shirt as part of Pitcher’s “dress for your day” philosophy.

8.45 AM

The first thing I do when I get to my desk is check my emails and attempt to plan the day ahead (well, as much as possible). Due to the nature of work in Tax Consulting, every day is different. I can guarantee that today I’ll encounter something I’ve never come across before.  My day can involve, but is not limited to; assisting the preparation of tax returns and activity statements, attending teleconferences, meetings and preparing taxation advice for clients. As a graduate, my goal is to gain as much experience as possible in order to accelerate my learning and help me decide what subsection of tax I am most suited to.

9.00 AM

Next, I go for a coffee with some of my team. There is no lack of coffee options around our office. It’s good to catch up with team members in a less formal setting and chat about what happened last night on Married At First Sight and The 7:30 Report.

9.15 AM

I’m in the processes of finishing a draft piece of advice on a client. Drafting pieces of advice is one of the aspects of my job I enjoy most as I get to apply my understanding of taxation law to real life scenarios. Once I have finished my draft, the manager who assigned me the job will review what I’ve done. When the manager is happy, it will then be reviewed by the partner before it is sent to the client.

12.30 PM

Time for lunch. I typically alternate between going for a run and having lunch with my friends from across the firm. As I have footy training tonight, I’ll leave the run for tomorrow. There are only 2 other grads on my floor so it is nice to catch up with people I would not otherwise see every day.

1.30 PM

Time for a Tax Consulting group meeting in regards to the new building we’re moving to in June 2018. We are briefed on what to expect and what the move will mean for us. It’s exciting to be moving to a building that has been designed for Pitcher’s specifications and features the latest technologies. My only hope is that we’re not “hot desking” as when we’re not seeing a client, we are predominately in the office.

3.00 PM

I catch up with a manager regarding a research and development (“R&D”) tax incentive application I have been working on. At a high level, the R&D tax incentive provides a tax offset for some of a company’s cost of doing eligible R&D activities by reducing a company’s income tax liability. R&D is not your typical tax or accounting work, however it’s extremely interesting to see the latest innovations Australian companies are coming up with.

Overall, every day in Tax Consulting is different and I have learnt and been exposed to more than I could have ever imagined coming out of university. Being part of a firm that values my opinion and invests so much into my development is something I am truly grateful for and lucky to be a part of.
