Pros & Cons

  • The people - The support that the team has for each other is amazing. Every team I have worked in has had great comradery. There is always laughter in the office. The pace - I love how fast paced your days are, whilst the hours are long, they fly by. There is always something going on and you are mostly very busy. There is never a dull moment out on site.
  • The opportunities made available to distinguish your best qualities. Also having surrounding mentors to teach and help build our construction knowledge.
  • Team and the people.
  • Strong company support, great graduate program, career minded.
  • Being onsite to see construction processes in practice. Building landmark projects.
  • Whilst I enjoy my busy days, it can be very tiring and stressful. Also having to work Saturdays is less than ideal.
  • Long hours, as expected in the industry.
  • Work life balance.
  • Working long hours and weekends.
  • There are many admin/mundane jobs that need to be completed and those usually end up being the tasks for graduates. Some graduates are given far more of these tasks than others and you could be doing a role you dislike for some time.

Career Prospects
I'm not too sure at this point in time as I am still a graduate and haven't gotten promoted yet. I do think that people who work really hard are rewarded.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Many initiatives, including workplace giving and community giving. Community projects include charitable donations along with company funded projects.

Culture

Culture
Our office has a good culture both during office hours and after. We have a relatively small team so everyone is familiar with each other and with each others Roles and Responsibilities. We have had a few out of office team building afternoons which I believe helps the team's morale. What also helps is that the team enjoys socialising together outside of work hours and having a beer.

Diversity

Diversity
The company is aiming to improve diversity. The intake of graduates in my year was roughly 40% women and 60% men. This reflected the percentage of males and females that applied for the company. My Project Director for my project is very passionate about encouraging women in the industry, therefore throughout my team there are many young women which is great to see. Women in Senior Management is lacking however there are many young women coming through, so will have to wait a few years! Cultural Diversity still seems a little bit behind and something the company could work on.

Satisfaction
Dependent on the module which you are completing at the time; day to day duties can significantly alter. Most recently I was working in contract administration which meant I spent a lot of time working from a computer and dealing with financial sectors of the site. I have now moved into a supervision role which sees me spending a majority of my day out on site in a live environment understanding the procedures and processes of the structure.

Managers and the leadership within Probuild are actively involved with the graduate program at program and often invest a large amount of time assisting in the growth and development of the team - they will often go out of their way to praise a job well done, and to ensure you are enjoying the tasks you have been assigned. similarly the Leadership Team and Managers often give great advice around future career prospects, ways to navigate current challenges and in general provide insight into where the company's future is heading.

Office Work Environment
If varies from site to site, my current office has high ceilings and windows with plenty of space. My last office was so small, with small desks and no windows. The office before that was so big we had multiple meeting rooms and a table tennis table. Another office I had was portable site sheds which were cold and everything was covered in dusk. It changes depending on what space is available and the style of project manager.

Recruitment
The interview process was incredibly organized. The HR team got back to me after each interview within a very short time frame. Prior to commencing work I got a call from my line manager to confirm my start date / answer any questions etc. Probuild's dedication to finding the right graduates amazed me. Each interview went for 45 minutes or more so they had a sufficient amount of time to learn about me. They asked questions about why I wanted to work for the company, why I was right for the position, previous experience, and general questions about hobbies etc. I heavily researched to company website to understand the Projects Probuild complete, the Company Values, Company Culture etc. This was very helpful to ensure I could justify why I was right for the company. It is also important to understand your Pros, but also be able to identify your cons to demonstrate that you are self-aware and always striving to improve.

I earned more money in a part time job working 3 days a week during my university degree but Probuild provide reasonable pay for inexperienced graduates. Discussions or ball park figures about pay post graduate programme would make financial planning a lot easier though.

Work Hours
The hardest part of the job is the work/life balance. On average the hours are not to bad but for example when your doing a long spell of 6 days a week over a few months leading up to PC it can take a toll, not only physically and emotionally but peoples family lifes.
