The role of science and technology in the drive for international development is huge. Global social challenges such as access to remote medical diagnosis, food security, and sustainable fuel consumption are affecting the quality of life for billions of people every day. With the ever-growing call on science and technology to address the complex social issues of the world, science students are required to expand their thinking beyond the lab and traditional roles.

On an Internship with Project Everest Ventures, you’ll be working with a team on the development of one of our social ventures overseas in your university break. Our Ventures are focused on building sustainable communities with many impactful development projects, with an emphasis on Human-Centred methodologies, including Design Thinking and Lean business processes, along with exponential technologies, including AI and alternative energy systems to create a social, environmental, and health impact. Not only will you be creating a solution that provides genuine social change, but you’ll be armed with critical skills employers are looking for, including: business principles, leadership, public speaking and communication, problem solving, and entrepreneurial experience.

Ventures that you could be working on include:

    • Health Tech Consulting, saves time and medical resources by tackling access to health care in rural communities through AI enabled medical diagnosis.
    • Solar Consulting & Energy Infrastructure, which aim to enable off-the-grid, household and business access to reliable and efficient alternative energy through small scale solutions.
    • Hidden Hunger is an accessible digital information system to inform rural communities about what crops to grow locally to ensure a complete diet with the aim to integrate this approach on a community level.

What can you expect from a Project Everest Internship?

    • You’ll be engaging directly with the local community.

In order to ensure our ventures are providing genuine impact and solving real issues, we work closely with members of the local community running workshops and focus groups, prototyping and feedback sessions, conducting surveys and interviewing, and distributing the socially beneficial products and services.

    • Every day is different.

Depending on what stage your venture is at during your internship, you could be doing completely different activities each day. If you’re testing a prototype one day, you could be running community meetings the next. It’s definitely not your traditional Science internship.

    • You will be contributing towards achieving a sustainable impact.

Whilst you won’t necessarily be creating social change every day, you’ll be part of building a product or service that is needed, sustainable and scalable so that it can be rolled out to community members and change lives.

    • It will be challenging.

Building a start-up has its fair share of challenges, and when you’re working in a developing country with limited resources these are magnified…but that’s what makes the wins and subsequent social impact all that much sweeter in the end!

    • You’ll be building a competitive edge as a future Science graduate.

Yes, you’ll be applying the skills from your degree to a new context, however you’ll be gaining experiences that are beyond the scope of your discipline. Imagine being able to say yes to having experience in the start-up space, international development, cross-cultural communication, social enterprise, lean business principles, and design thinking methodologies... and you haven’t even graduated yet. That’s one way to differentiate yourself as a Science student, that’s for sure.

    Who are we looking for?

If you're looking for voluntourism or an opportunity to add a line to your resume, then this is not for you. If you are committed to creating social change, sustainable social enterprises and achieving determined sustainability development goals across the globe, then we want to hear from you.

We are seeking passionate, socially-minded, and hard-working people to undertake our Internships, with the potential for further leadership and business training beyond. Be part of the social change and apply for your place now.

    **Please note
This is not a paid role. It is a fee-paying program.
There is no guarantee of employment upon completion of your internship.
