What it does: It has many affiliated businesses under its brand Samsung including Samsung Electronics, Samsung Heavy Industries, Samsung Engineering, Samsung C&T Corporation, Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Everland, and Cheil Worldwide.

Size and presence: Samsung USA has more than 20,000 employees across 46 states. As of May 2020, the market capitalization of the company was around $260 billion. 

Best known for: producing a wide variety of consumer and industry electronics, including digital media devices, memory chops, appliances, semiconductors, and integrated systems. 

The good bits: The company offers an open and collaborative environment to promote sharing of unique knowledge and expertise. Also, it is known for skill development and career growth as the company is dynamically developing. 

The not-so-good bits: Without having a university education and technical skills, it can be pretty challenging or even impossible to get a job at Samsung. Also, the employees are expected to give their best shot possible due to the stiff competition in and out. 

The Samsung Story 

The Samsung Group was founded by Lee Byung-Chul as a trading company in 1938. However, it diversified into various areas over the next three decades such as food processing, textiles, insurance, securities, and retail. In late 1960, it entered the electronics industry and later the shipbuilding industry in the mid-1970s. It gained immense popularity and subsequent growth in these two areas. Lee died in 1987 and the company was separated into five business groups - Samsung Group, CJ Group, Hansol Group, Shinsegae Group, and Joongang Group. 

Samsung America is known for its wide range of products which includes Home Entertainment, Mobile, Home Appliances, Computing, Semiconductors, Enterprise, and Emerging Technology. According to the company, ‘over 71% of all U.S. households own at least one Samsung product.

Recruitment Process 

The selection process at Samsung America consists of four main rounds including…

  • Global Samsung Aptitude Test 
  • Technical Test 
  • Technical Interview
  • HR Interview 

The first round is conducted to check the problem-solving skills on data structures of the applicants while the second round is all about technical stuff like computer networks, data structures, OS, DBMS, etc. The technical test is followed by the technical interview where more technical questions are asked. The final round is the HR interview where normal questions like personal details, family background, interests, etc are asked.

Social Contributions 

Samsung America has contributed around $121 million to schools, hospitals, and charitable foundations across the country. It has also contributed approx $8 million to scholarships along with product donations to veterans’ initiatives such as the Fisher House Foundation, American Legion, and the Korean War Memorial Foundation. Around $21 million in tech donations are also made to over 1,200 schools.  

For the planet, Samsung America is planning to bring sustainable products and services so that its carbon footprint can be reduced. The company is also providing a good energy star rating for most of its products. 

Controversies 

In 2019, the US marketing team gets into a conflict of interest controversy and it was alleged for playing too close with big ad agencies and media conglomerates. It was about spending the marketing budget and the company has reportedly terminated the contracts of some marketing division employees. However, it wasn’t clear how many employees in the US have been affected.
