About Services Australia

  • Government & Public Service

We make government services simple so people can get on with their lives.

Every hour of every day in Australia, people in need turn to the Australian Government for help. In those moments, our agency responds.
Our work spans social security and healthcare, in addition to disaster relief, assistance to farmers and specialised services for vulnerable communities.

In 2020, our agency took centre stage, helping millions of Australians affected by devastating bushfires and then COVID-19.
We’re an agency that helps people and we’re committed to progress, constantly moving forward to deliver services that are simple, helpful, respectful and transparent.

About the program

When you join our graduate program, you’ll help us make government services simple.
We’ll develop you as a leader and give you a range of experience and opportunity to kick start your career in the Australian Public Service.
Our grads work in national and regional offices with plenty of support to help you meet your career and personal goals. Our dedicated team will help you along the way and we’ll team you up with a graduate buddy and Senior Executive Staff mentor.

We’re looking for a wide range of people to join us. We want people with all kinds of backgrounds who’ve graduated from their degree within the last 5 years.

As a public-sector employer, we provide generous remuneration, superannuation and leave entitlements. For grads who join us in 2022, we offer 2 pay points. What you’ll get paid depends on your qualification level:

  • if you’ve completed an undergrad degree, we’ll pay you $61,902
  • if you’ve completed a double degree or have a higher qualification, we’ll pay you $68,993.

If you successfully complete the program, you’ll progress to an APS 5 classification, no matter what your qualification level is.
Our 10-month program offers 8 streams:

  • generalist
  • communication
  • data analytics
  • finance
  • human resources
  • legal
  • social work
  • STEM

We accept all degrees in our generalist stream.

To apply for our communication, data analytics, finance, human resources, legal social work or STEM streams, you need to have a degree relevant to one of those fields.

If you have a degree in any of these particular streams, you can also apply to our generalist stream. You can apply for more than one stream, if you’re eligible.

Data analytics graduates

This year, we’ll source some of our data analytics graduates from the whole-of-government recruitment process the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) undertakes.

If you want to work for us in data analytics, you can:

  • apply through the ABS process
  • apply to us directly, through our own recruitment process.

You can also apply to our generalist stream, through our own recruitment process.

Human resources graduates

We’ll source all of our human resources graduates from the whole-of-government recruitment process the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) undertakes.

If you want to work for us in human resources, you need to apply through the ATO.

You can also apply to our generalist stream, through our own recruitment process.

Placement locations

The majority of roles are in Canberra but we also have positions in other major cities and regional towns. If you’re offered a spot in our program and need to move to a new location, we’ll help you relocate.

Development activities

We have a range of training and development to help you grow and shape your career. During our 10-month program, you’ll take part in a variety of activities including:

  • Australian Public Service Commission events
  • graduate and internal events
  • presentations to our Senior Executive Staff (SES)

You’ll also gain:

  • first-hand experience in our service delivery environments to learn how Australians access government services
  • formal training specific to your work area
  • an accredited learning qualification, the Diploma of Government

These opportunities will:

  • strengthen your networking skills
  • develop your career
  • expose you to our business
  • broaden your understanding of the Australian Public Service (APS)

Support

We know how important it is to feel supported throughout your time in our program. We have a dedicated team in place to help you from your initial offer and relocation, right through to your graduation ceremony.

We work hard to ensure you settle into the program and make the most of the opportunities our agency has to offer!

We’re committed to providing a work environment that values diversity and inclusion and supports all staff to reach their full potential. We have a range of workplace diversity and inclusion strategies, policies and initiatives in place to achieve this. Our team would be happy to talk with you about our RecruitAbility scheme available to candidates who identify as having a disability.
