As stated by Graham Kerr the company's CEO of South 32 on Thursday the 24 April 2023 in Melbourne Mining Club session held at Melbourne Town Hall Ballroom that: "South 32 is transitioning towards a transition from bulk material i.e., Energy Coal, Metallurgical coal and Manganese to base metal mining which is the 75% company value at present. The company's next series of project execution around the Taylor-Clark deposits in Hermosa Mine in Arizona US which will push the company's value from 75% to 85% base metals commodity. Such metals i.e., Copper, Zinc and Nickel are far more attractive on a world of one degree and a half or decarbonization."

South32 is one of the biggest emitters due to the coal used in the Powerhouse) but there are plans in place to change this (decarbonisation glidepath). For example, coal to gas conversions, new capital projects to reduce steam demand, etc. It's a pretty exciting time to work at a refinery in general if you're interested in decarb since the action to reduce our footprint has really picked up.
