Evi Janse de Jonge

My day looks pretty busy, but I tell my colleague I might be able to help with a project later that week.

7.30 AM

My alarm goes off and I jump in the shower. After having breakfast, I pack my bag with everything I need for the day.

8.30 AM

I jump on my bike and ride to work–a 15-minute ride along the Yarra River. I’m lucky to enjoy the view of Melbourne’s skyline as I bike in. Our Collins Street office has secure bike parking, lockers and showers which makes it easy for me to bike to work every day.

9.00 AM

The first thing I do when I arrive is grab a takeaway flat white from my favourite cafe next to the office. It gets pretty busy here in the morning, but after a few minutes, I’ve got my coffee and take the lift to my desk on the 25th floor. The 360° views in our office still amaze me every day! I say good morning to my colleagues, switch on my computer, read through my emails and check what I’ve got on my calendar today.

9.30 AM

My first meeting of the day is a team meeting with the planning and design team. After some chit-chat about our weekends, we discuss the projects we’re working on and see who has the capacity to help. My day looks pretty busy, but I tell my colleague I might be able to help with a project later that week. We schedule a call to chat about it in a couple of days.

I put my headphones in and get stuck into an active travel project for a local government client. Using AutoCAD, I design three concept ideas for a busy street in a local suburb. My manager calls to check how I’m getting on. I share my screen with him, and he gives me some tips on my designs. He suggests raising an intersection and shows me a similar intersection in Melbourne where they’ve recently raised the intersection and installed bike lanes.

11.00 AM

I’m grabbing a coffee with a Senior staff member who acts as my mentor. He helped me adjust to life outside of university when I first started at Stantec, and we still catch up regularly to chat about my work. I tell him I want to learn how to better prioritise my projects and workload, and he suggests some ways to help.

Lunch time! I must admit, I don’t bring lunch from home often as the food plaza downstairs has so much to offer. My favourite is sushi, so I grab some and bring it upstairs to the communal kitchen where I can eat while catching up with my friends from other teams.

1.00 PM

I join an online ‘lunch and learn’ session where a colleague is presenting on how to build a strong resume. We attach our resumes to proposals so that clients can learn more about the project team we’re proposing. I take notes to help me update my own resume when I have some downtime.

1.30 PM

I grab my high-viz and the health & safety assessment I prepared last week, then head out to a site visit. My colleague and I are cycling to a suburb where we’re undertaking a walkability assessment. We walk around the neighbourhood while we share ideas and take notes and photos of opportunities to enhance the walkability in the area. We watch the streets at school pick-up time to see what impact traffic has on the pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

I get back to the office just in time to join a client meeting. The client’s had feedback from the community on our project and shares the details with me and the project manager. We discuss the changes we need to make to achieve the best outcome for everyone. I always find this one of the most challenging parts of a project, so I’m trying to learn as much as I can from the experienced project manager.

5.00 PM

After the meeting I go back to my desk and type up some notes while they’re fresh in my mind. I then open AutoCAD spend the rest of the day working on my designs from earlier.

6.00 PM

My workday is done. Most people have left the office as I grab my homemade dinner from the fridge. We have flexible work arrangements here at Stantec, so I can adjust my start and finish times to help me balance work and life. I’m heading straight to soccer practice from here as the club is closer to work than home. My teammates and I are quite sore from Sunday’s game, so we take it easy tonight.

9.00 PM

I finally get home after a long day and take a quick shower. My partner and I catch-up about our days and I have a snack before bed.

9.30 PM

Time to get ready for bed. Usually, I watch some YouTube videos or listen to a podcast before I fall asleep. Ready to do it all over again tomorrow!
