Management at Victorian Government

8.0
8.0 rating for Management, based on 23 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
Some managers have been really supportive and made themselves available for me to ask questions. Others have really been too busy to take on a grad meaning I'm not made a priority and one-on-one catch ups are regularly pushed back. These managers have also not made their expectations clear which is difficult. I've passed this feedback on to the coordinators so I hope this won't be a problem for future grads.

I have had a great experience with managers, who have to undergo their own learning workshops to be able to manage the unique circumstances of having a graduate in their supervision. In addition to managers, you may have a separate supervisor (who is not a Manager) in your team who is there to support you through your rotation and monitor your progress. It is expected that you share your performance plan (you will find out all about this resource) with your supervisor to track your work progress and goals. It is a VPS standard to have routine 1:1 chats with your supervisor/manager to share feedback with one another and raise any concerns if needed.

Managers/supervisors are great, and the VPSC provides good support, especially given the number of graduates in the program.

Approachable, professional, good listeners, aware of stress management and the importance, ensuring a positive and safe work environment.

Great managers overall. My first manager definitely needed better training in how to manage people as he did not seem to know... It's a pretty casual relationship and what you put in you get out.

They are quite stressed which can create a poor learning environment.

Had some good ones, and some not so good. Mostly depends on management styles, but this can be influenced easily through a conversation.

I have had a manager in each rotation. First rotation the manager was ok, she was fairly accessible and was great at explaining things to an absolute government newbie. My second rotation manager was amazing, she was a mentor and friend while still maintaining a manager persona. We got along really well, she had practical tips and feedback and we had regular catch ups that were not a waste of time. My third rotation manager is ok, not as bad as the first, not as good as the second.
