Fraser Greenfield

It doesn’t matter how well you did in your exams if you can’t apply theory into practice. So ensure you can think independently, practically and work in a team.

What does your job involve?

My day tends to involve troubleshooting large mechanical systems, analysing production data, and designing new products for our customers.

Going back in time when you were at university, what three pieces of advice would you give yourself as a student?

  • Do everything weeks before it’s due
  • Engage in side projects outside the curriculum, particularly those associated with University clubs.
  • Sleep in as much as you can

What is your experience of the company culture?

It’s a fast paced, ‘can do’ attitude kind of place!

What opportunities did the Visy Graduate Program provide you?

  • I get to see how a big manufacturing company operates first hand
  • I have a dynamic work place where every day presents a new challenge
  • I have a lot of trust and faith placed into my abilities from day one.

What attracted you to the Visy Graduate Program?

The recruitment process was unlike any other grad program out there. Everyone else has you doing online ‘exams’, then a recorded ‘online interview’, before you end up flying to another city to see someone in the flesh.

Visy instead opted to force all the applicants to cooperate and compete in a number of simulations. We were measured on how well we perform on the spot, as opposed to how well we can pass an arbitrary online test.

What skills from your degree did you utilise in the Graduate Program?

Mainly scaled critical thinking. My degree taught me how to look at the big picture, the little details and understand how it all came together.

What have been the highlights of your Graduate Program experience thus far?

Getting sent out to my hometown to evaluate issues for one of the continuous improvement projects I’m running… six months into first rotation.

What is your #1 tip for graduates thinking of applying for the Visy Graduate Program?

It doesn’t matter how well you did in your exams if you can’t apply theory into practice. So ensure you can think independently, practically and work in a team.

What do you enjoy most about working at Visy?

Working with the team at Food Plastics!

What is your favourite part/most challenging aspect about working at Visy?

Having to put my knowledge of material science, much of which was cutting edge in the curriculum into practice at Visy!
