The Visy graduate program provided me with an opportunity to learn and gain experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What does your job involve?

My primary role in my current rotation is to support the technical resource team with internal projects. For the last 8 months, I’ve primarily worked on a technology upgrade on a piece of machinery. This includes re-designing components, sourcing and quoting through various manufacturers, technical hands on installation of components and involvement with machine safety, commissioning and documentation.

Going back in time when you were at university, what three pieces of advice would you give yourself as a student?

  • Take the time to enjoy the University experience and lifestyle
  • Get involved in as many activities you enjoy as you can whilst meeting new people
  • Don’t be afraid of failure

What is your experience of the company culture?

Visy has a very team based culture. It is rare that you find someone that doesn’t enjoy working for the company which makes it a very enjoyable workplace. Everyone on all levels are encouraged to participate which makes you feel just as important as the person next to you.

What opportunities did the Visy Graduate Program provide you?

The Visy graduate program provided me with an opportunity to learn and gain experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The graduate program has given me confidence to continue to step out of my comfort zone and grow as a professional. My colleagues have been incredibly supportive along the way.

What attracted you to the Visy Graduate Program?

Having had some previous experience in a manufacturing environment I knew I wanted to work in a similar environment. The Visy graduate program also stood out to me because it was a structured and supported program that allowed me to experience different parts of the business that would give me an opportunity to challenge myself and continue to learn and grow.

What skills from your degree did you utilise in the Graduate Program?

Skills carried over from my University degree that are being utilised in the workplace include:

  • Communication skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Time management
  • Engineering drafting
  • Basic understanding and fundamentals of Thermodynamics / Fluid mechanics

What have been the highlights of your Graduate Program experience thus far?

Highlights of my graduate program experience to date include:

  • The opportunity to experience a Visy innovation expo with my graduate peers
  • Seeing my first machine upgrade on the production floor
  • Working within a great projects team with exposure to a vast range of machinery and technology

What is your #1 tip for graduates thinking of applying for the Visy Graduate Program?

Don’t try to be someone you are not. No one is expecting you to change the world or know all the answers. Find something you are passionate about and just be yourself.

What do you enjoy most about working at Visy?

I enjoy working as part of a team where everyone is given the opportunity to contribute. The independence of dealing with the day to day challenges are rewarding and make every day unique.

What is your favourite part/most challenging aspect about working at Visy?

My favourite part about working for Visy are the people. They have made the transition from education to industry easier with their ongoing support and guidance.
The most challenging aspect of working for Visy would have to be adapting to the scope of work. There will be times where late nights and weekends are required so finding the right balance for you takes time.
