Raine Wong

The Program has provided a rotational based development where graduates can learn and understand the workings of different mills.

What does your job involve?

My job currently involves mainly project work ranging from, designing a small chemical kitchen to developing a process simulation of the current mill. However, all rotations are different and thus, my job scope could completely change in my next rotation.

Going back in time when you were at university, what three pieces of advice would you give yourself as a student?

  • Don’t be too hard on yourself (nobody is perfect)
  • Go out and play sports more
  • Networking is actually very important even if it doesn’t seem that way initially

What is your experience with the company culture?

Definitely dependent on sites. The Tumut site is very family-oriented, nurturing and supportive. The company also definitely challenges you and pushes you to be better.

What opportunities did the Visy Graduate Program provide you?

The Program has provided a rotational based development where graduates can learn and understand the workings of different mills. Being exposed to different mills will help the graduate find their niche and hopefully an area that they are most passionate in.

The Program has also provided an opportunity for long term career development.

What attracted you to the Visy Graduate Program?

The straightforward application process. Other graduate programs have very lengthy processes that could deter many graduates, such as long questionnaires, 8- 10 step application processes, etc.

What skills from your degree did you utilise in the Graduate Program?

Technical skills without a doubt but most importantly, teamwork, accountability and communication skills. Soft skills are invaluable.

What have been the highlights of your Graduate Program experience thus far?

Definitely the people around me. Everyone so far has accepted me for who I am and respected me as an engineer despite only being a graduate.

What is your #1 tip for graduates thinking of applying for the Visy Graduate Program?

Go for it! Visy so far has been supportive in wanting to develop a career development you want that also complements the needs of the company. It definitely is an option if you want to develop a career at Visy.

What do you enjoy most about working at Visy?

The ability to meet new people who are supportive of you.

What is your favourite part/most challenging aspect about working at Visy?

The most challenging part is sometimes the lack of “structured support” in your role. Most of the time you would be thrown into the deep end and expected to figure a way out on your own. It is definitely a challenge but with the right people and attitude, you will emerge a stronger and better person.
