Carl Yang

I’ll have some weekly or bi-weekly meetings to catch up with other parts of the team, where we go over general roadmap goals and what we want to work on.

9.00 AM

Late starts in HK mean you have much more free time in the mornings (if you’re not sleeping in). I like to do some exercise - we play basketball with some friends in the company on Tuesday mornings, and there are also spin classes on Thursdays or Yoga on Mondays.

10.30 AM

I sit with the larger Delta 1 team and run the HK book with a senior trader. The HK market opens at noon, so I usually get in around 10.30 am on a typical day. I typically skip brekky to unintentionally intermittent fast, but it’s always tempting walking past the nice array of breakfast foods (croissants, cheese, fruit) Suzanna has prepared.

11.00 AM

I’m more of a social coffee drinker myself, but I usually have one before the market opens in the morning and one during our lunch break. Typically, I’ll have some weekly or bi-weekly meetings to catch up with other parts of the team, where we go over general roadmap goals and what we want to work on. Else it’s either trading if things are busy or doing some research if someone can cover or the market’s very quiet.

3.00 PM

The HK market has a 1-hour lunch break from 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm. If the weather’s good, we always go to a cafe to grab a coffee or, at the very least, go for a stroll and get some fresh air.

8.00 PM

The HK market now closes at 7.30 pm, and we have some end-of-day processes to do, but they are usually done by 8.00 pm. Depending on how I feel, I may stay back a little longer to work on some research projects that I didn’t get to work on during trading. These are the kind of projects with no explicit deadlines (i.e. no clients), but the earlier you can do it, the earlier you can start adding value to the desk and improve it.

9.00 PM

It’s usually a bit late by the time I’m done. I occasionally grab dinner with other HK colleagues who finish at a similar time and chat about trading or just making banter. Or I head home, grab some dinner on the way, kick back to catch up on some shows or browse some YouTube.
