Graduate Jobs in Sydney overview

What to expect as a graduate in Sydney

Sydney is an advanced economy, with strengths in tourism, finance and manufacturing. The highest number of graduate jobs can be found in the professional, scientific and technical services, followed very closely by financial and insurance services, and accommodation and food services.

Over 90 per cent of international banks have their regional headquarters and over 60 per cent of technology companies are based in Sydney, making it a world-class hub of knowledge-based businesses. Sydney is a melting pot of cultures, and has a large community of English, Irish and Chinese immigrants. Diversity in the workplace is not only encouraged, but demanded.

Sydney has a very high number of people in executive roles (such as managers or professionals), while technicians and trade workers and sales and service workers round out the top three profession groups. Graduates can expect to quite likely follow these pathways while working their way up the ladder in Sydney. Most graduates in Sydney are employed full-time, but just over a quarter of the city’s workforce are employed part-time or casually.

Sydney is a place where you can earn the big bucks. Average salaries tend to be higher in Sydney than for equivalent roles in other Australian cities, and the graduate job market is no exception. Graduate salaries usually start at $60k per annum at most professional services firms in Sydney, and can be significantly higher for some niches and specialisations. But before you get too excited, remember that Sydney is usually rated as Australia’s most expensive city for cost of living, so you could need that extra support yourself!

Finding a Graduate job in Sydney

Finding graduate jobs and internships in Sydney can be challenging due to the size of the population and competitiveness of the market. While the number of graduate jobs in Sydney has been increasing steadily in most sectors during recent years, so too has the number of new graduates entering the market. There are more than 10 universities with campuses in Sydney, and nearly all have grown their student intake at a rate faster than new graduate jobs have become available.

The main avenues graduates and interns use to find work in Sydney are internet jobs boards, word-of-mouth referrals and social media (i.e. LinkedIn, Twitter). Careers fairs are popular for meeting lots of potential employers in one location, with the four largest careers fairs in Sydney (by number of attendees) being the AAGE Big Meet, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, and University of Technology, all of which are held in March. Recruitment agencies are a good option if you’re looking for a short-term contract.

Many larger employers with structured graduate rotations in Sydney will begin accepting applications as early as January or February for programs that begin in January of the following year.
