From Intern to India: Keegan's career journey

IMC Trading Australia

Keegan's journey of the past few years is a testament to the opportunities available at IMC.

What first sparked your interest in trading and finance?

While both my parents had a career in finance, growing up I had little exposure to trading until my final year of university, when a high school friend took part in the IMC Internship Program. It opened up the world of trading for me as a possible career opportunity, but I was due to spend the final year of my double degree in maths and computer science on a study exchange in the US. Then COVID came along and cut that trip short. Once I was back in Australia, I immediately applied for the next IMC Internship program, and was fortunate enough to land it. The internship then converted into a graduate role, and I never looked back.

What did the internship at IMC involve?

Due to COVID, the internship had to take place remotely, which meant the format was different to the in-person program. A range of classroom seminars focused on the fundamentals of trading, derivatives and financial products, and helped us understand how IMC operates in the market, and there were specific projects where we could demonstrate our newly learned skills. One project I worked on, for example, was identifying if a dispersion metric was profitable for trading.

What was the highlight of the internship for you?

I really enjoyed the trading simulations and games that tested our knowledge. Learning options theory was a particular highlight for me and we got to put those skills to use in a big bash cricket trading game. And, of course, meeting so many extremely smart people. There were lots of social events and I felt part of the IMC culture and team straight away despite being remote.

What did you find challenging about the internship, and how did you overcome it?

Initially, I struggled with the exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading simulation. My trading volume, aggressiveness, and risk tolerance weren’t aligned with what the company expected. I had to push myself out of my comfort zone over the ten weeks to demonstrate that I had what it takes – but it was worth it for my overall career development.

You then went on to take part in the IMC Global Traineeship. Can you tell us more?

The Traineeship is certainly a step up from the internship. Expectations are naturally higher. I was surprised by how complex our system is and impressed by how it’s operated so efficiently. About halfway through the Traineeship, COVID restrictions were lifted and we were able to come into the office for the local part of the training, where each trainee shadows a series of desks. Meeting the other graduates from Amsterdam and spending time working together in person was fantastic.

Next step: graduate trader! What was it like transitioning into the role?

It was another steep learning curve, but I loved it. Every day was – and still is – a challenge with new problems to solve. My first role was on a market making desk, trading structured products. It was here that I learned everything I needed to know about IMC’s systems, how to think laterally to solve problems, and how to be a strong trader.

I worked on a different approach to trading the most liquid structured products in Hong Kong. I was also involved in the early stages of several other projects, such as modelling pricing, taking a position on the premium of these products, and setting up new strategies.

What is it about trading that you enjoy most?

In trading, there are always new projects, ideas and solutions to optimise your strategy. It’s the perfect career for me because I always want to learn and challenge myself. At IMC, the culture is built on giving everyone lots of freedom and responsibility from day one, and I use my creative problem-solving skills on a daily basis. That, coupled with the instant feedback loops and a performance-driven environment means you have the chance to make an impact right from the start.

Fast-forward to today, and you’re based in IMC’s Mumbai office. How did the move come about?
I’ve always wanted to live and travel overseas. After previously expressing my interest in this, I was asked by senior colleagues if I would like to go to India to help set up a new desk there. The timing was perfect, as a group of colleagues were also considering the move. I got to go to our Amsterdam office for 3 weeks training before heading to India. It was a huge opportunity for a graduate trader, as we would be trading in a unique way, making it all the more exciting.

So, what does your role in India involve?

I’m currently on a positional trading desk. It's a new style of trading for me, but I’m motivated to establish myself as a strong trader, set up a profitable desk, and grow it into a staple of our revenue stream in India. To master the domain and become the go-to person for this area is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Outside of work, what have been some of the highlights of living in a new city?
Where to start? It’s been an incredible experience. I’ve loved learning more about the culture and the opportunities to travel are incredible. I’ve hiked the mountains of Kashmir, spent the weekend in Bangkok, watched the Cricket World Cup in Chennai, and visited the Taj Mahal in Agra. These are experiences that I’ll never forget. I’ve got plenty more travel adventures lined up as my list of places to visit just keeps getting longer!

Based on your experience so far, what sets IMC apart?

At IMC, your career path is in your hands. If you express a desire to do something and can demonstrate the ability to do it, and to add value by doing it, IMC will make it happen. With offices around the world and new initiatives arising all the time, there are abundant opportunities not just to travel, but to stretch yourself and to grow at a faster rate than you thought possible.

Do you have any advice for students or graduates thinking about following in your footsteps?
Never say no to new learning opportunities or experiences. Take the leap of faith on a new challenge, whether that’s a new project, a new desk or a new country, whenever you can. Actively seek out feedback and take on board every piece you receive. Although you might not always agree with it, every piece of feedback comes from a legitimate place: it’s your job to interpret it, apply it to your specific context, and use it to accelerate your career.
